Getting the Tranny Rebuilt

Hey guys. My second gear on my 99 250 7.3 auto is gone and I am going to have the transmission rebuilt. What are some of the things that I need to look out for, I am having the transmission company give me some info on the parts that they are going to be using in the rebuild. They are telling me that they can put some heavier duty parts in there and a shift kit to help it shift quicker, and more firm as well. Any input you guys have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do it right the first time and get a BTS. It will be the last tranny you put in that truck. Just do a search on BTS on here and see what other are saying. It might cost you a little more up front, but it will pay off in the end.

I think it's a Ozark Vizsla.

I'm not a tranny guy but if you post a list of the parts someone here with some tranny knowledge will hopefully respond and be able to tell you if the shop is using the good stuff, or recommend something else.

Personally I would go John Wood tranny only because I am closer to CA then AR.

you will get a lot of folks here suggesting a BTS tranny because they are a terrific unit. Love mine from the second I put it in gear two years ago.

Me and my coz just got done today with putting in a tran from john wood now I haven't pulled with it yet, but the T/C is one nice piece and the truck is so nice and smooth, haven't got on it yet to see what this thing can do, but talking with him on the phone, he is easy to work.

just my two cents.

My BTS build day is this Friday. I've been getting quite antsy pantsy for the past two weeks. From Arkansas to Washington is one long trip that is worth the wait. JW is a great transmission/builder, I know others with BTS in this area. Its hard to beat those that you know...if that makes sense.

Bryan's truck shop? I was looking on their website, aside from some cool track pictures and some gears I didn't really see any info. Anyone want to say how much their transmission cost.

I just lost second gear yesterday too so I feel for you, it sucked.

I am curious to know if one is better than the other or if the JW and BTS are close to being the same? I am in So Cal so JW is a 2-2 1/2hr drive and I am just wondering if anyone would recomend the BTS over the JW? I am also curious of the price of the BTS trans, looks like JW is around $3900 for the stage I.

Where is JW, any more info other than $3900 for a stage one? What does the stage one include?

Copied from the John Wood web site John Wood Automotive - Home

John Wood Automotive specializes in Ford Diesel transmissions. We are now able to send out 3 different stages of transmissions for a 7.3 Diesel. Our first transmission is a stage 1 transmission. This transmission will run up to 400 HP, it has all new Ford parts and custom machined parts by John Wood. This will include a billet converter, and input shaft. A stage 1 transmission will cost $3900.00 plus shipping and handling.

Our second transmission, stage 2, will run about 600-700 HP. This transmission has everything that the stage 1 transmission had but we add an intermediate shaft. A stage 2 transmission will cost $4400.00 plus shipping and handling.
Our third transmission, stage 3, will run about 1000 HP, again this transmission has everything the stage 1 and 2 transmissions have, but we add an output shaft. This transmission will cost about $5500.00 plus shipping and handling.
On all of these transmissions we require you send back a transmission core. We provide a 3-year/50,000 mile warranty on all or our transmissions. We recommend you run SWEPCO racing oil for best performance; we can assist you on getting some of this oil for an additional charge. We also suggest a DP Tuner for your 7.3. The DP Tuner will help with mileage, performance, and help with towing. Any questions you have regarding a John Wood Transmission, please call our shop @ (760) 356-9421.

Thanks, I'm going to look more into both of these and see what will work best for me. But JW seems to have a lot more info available to start. I like answers straight
