Hi all: I have a 1998 31' ford chassis motorhome, v-10. I just drained the torque comverter and the tranny pan. I have read that I need to add 17 qts. Well after adding 15 qts. I started the MH and ran through the gears. Leaving the engine running and in park, I checked the dip stick. It was very hard to see the ATF on the stick. But it appeared to be 2 1/2" high. I drained 1 qt out and it still appears to be at the top of the grey plastic end. Does anyone know the absolute amonut I need to add after doing the above drains?
I just measured the old ATF that I drained. It was 12 qts. So it looks as if i need to remove some more. I wish the dip stick was easier to reed. BTW how does one tell what style tranny one has? 4R100 or what. I realize that in 1998 it was a change year.
I,m no expert but the tranny should be in neutral when checking fluid level, engine idling.
i'm no expert maybe someone else here could shed more lite on this point. in an 86 t-bird this is what was called for when i was messing with it.
Yes most any vehicle ive seen, it needs to be in neutral. But the owners manual states that when checking the tranny level it should be in park.
Go figure
12 quarts sounds closer to right. 17 quarts is if you get all the fluid out of the system. I drained my pan and changed the filter and it took about 10 quarts to fill back up. I didn't drain the torque converter, so 12 is probably very close.

The ONLY difference between neutral and park is that in park the parking pawl keeps the truck from rolling. Other than that it makes no difference checking the fluid in park or neutral.
