These new-fangled CD's and DVD's are really something! What won't they think of next? My question is this: Which side is the music/movie on? The blank, shiny side goes down, right? Which means that the media is on the up side with the picture/writing, right? And if so, how can it be that they can put ink or whatever on the grooves (?) where the info is? Am I making sense? Thanks.
Once you close the tray, the disc is lifted and spun (similar to a record), and the laser eye tracks from the center out and 'reads' the information stored on the shiny side. The laser moves out as the disc spins, kind of like a record but there's no physical contact between the two. If you notice, the tray is not solid and there's and opening or slot that the laser can 'see' through.
racerchick, you are wise. I never noticed the slot in the tray before. Thanks for the help. Next thing you know, they'll be able to treat kidney stones without surgery!
Yeah the laser is underneath and pointing up so it reads the "down side" of the disk. Some disks can be played on both sides, just flip them over. A disk with a paper or painted lable over most of the disk will only play on the shiney side.
A pet peeve of mine... NEVER lay a disk shiney side down on anything, like tables, TV cabinets etc. This will scratch the disk and eventually it will skip. If you rent videos you know what I mean.
If you really want to get confused, do a websearch on CD-R, CD+R, CD-RW, CD+RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM. These are computer users or people who like to "burn their own". If all you do is buy or rent, forgetaboutit.
Yeah, jim, THANKS A LOT! Just what I need...more confusion. On the other hand, when you're as confused as you can get, more won't hurt, so it's all good.
also the info is printed on the top where the label is. the laser reads threw the plastic disk thats why you can take scratches out of the bottom. but if the lable is messed up your screwed. double layered diskes have the info printed inbetween the plastic and sandwiched.
