My truck has a ton of excessive smoke when i first crank it. it will go away driving down the road but start back after it sits at idle for about 5 min.

If it smells like diesel fuel, it means it isn't being burned as normal.
It can mean the engine temperature is low, or the spray pattern from the injectors is not fine enough. Also if the compression is down.
There are several things that can cause a diesel to not burn the fuel properly.
Diesel engines used to put out a lot of smoke that smelled like unburned fuel when they first started. They did that until the engine temp came up.

might need to replace the o-rings on your injectors. also might want to post this question in the 7.3 diesel section.
