I pulled my third member out a while ago, decided to test backlash today (getting ready to put it back in ) and it's at about 35 thousandths
That's way too much, isn't it? I know spec is about 15. The truck was pretty quiet prior to me pulling the rear end, some of the gears are showing wear with scuffed metal on the outside edges. The truck sits a lot and I'm sure this is the first time the gears have seen daylight since it was at the factory.
never set backlash before, this is the first time i've seen a diff 'naked'.
also, is it safe for me to just use normal grade 8 bolts/nuts for the pinion cover and diff cover respectively?
edit: I should mention that the truck is hardly ever driven, the occasional offroad trip. I plan on regearing it eventually.
loosen the caps and turn the retainers... you want to push the ring gear into the pinion gear. I loosen the retainer on the pinion side just a little and then tighten the retainer on the gear side, this will walk the ring gear into the pinion gear. do a search on goggle for setting up a 9 inch there is lots of info out there.
