HELP! Gear Pattern or Secification ??????
OK, so I pulled my Dana 44 IFS apart ( 1986 F-150 4x4 ), cleaned everything, made dummy bearings out of the old ones and am putting it back together.
All has gone well.
I calculated that the pinion was .004 low ( 2.623 rather than the 2.627 that it should be ).
I corrected this when assembling.
I set the backlash according to the manual with .010 of preload.
The backlash is in spec. .007" ( should be .005 to .009 ).
I checked the pattern with gear paint .....
Exactly in the center but to the front on both the coast and drive side.
So this is telling me according to the charts ( I have three and they all agree 0 that the shim is correct and I need to increase the backlash.
Problem, if I increase the backlash enough to get a good paint pattern, it goes out of spec. .... to about .016"
So. what is more important ... the paint pattern or the backlash specifications?
Thanks ..... Mike
