My FIL has a 2000 Daewoo Lanos that he keeps asking me for info on. It seems it broke a timing belt about three years back and has been parked since. He's finally getting ready to fix it, or rather have a family friend fix it.
What I need to know is if this is an interference engine or not- Can it safely loose the timing belt?
Not in the US as Daewoo. They were in with GM before, used GM transmissions and some of their engines, but when they went under GM took over. Now you can buy a Daewoo as a Chevy Aveo in the US.
What I mean when I say their name isn't fit for a public forum-
I used to work at one of their dealerships, and I can honestly say those cars are garbage. Pull them off the truck, and into the shop for recalls, cars in for there first oil change with half the lights out and bad brake light switches, oil leaks, burned clutches, and so on.
The worst thing is that over in Korea (according to a Korean I knew in college), those are a decent car. It's just the ones they sent over were garbage.
My wife had one when we met, It was a good car. She took it in for an oil leak and had to wait for two weeks for an rubber gasket. We were upset that it took so long to get back but all in all a good car. We gave it to a friend of ours three years ago and he is still driving it today.
good luck finding any good parts in the US, we had one in the shop about 6 months ago and it was tough finding parts for it. The guy got frustrated because we couldn't find parts so he took it to the junkyard and bought a new Ford.
In the European market and UK Daewoo was recently done away with and rebadged as Chevrolet, as the first step into Chevy's new Euro-invasion.
They may have seemed like a joke here but in every other market they're a perfectly viable choice.
And remember to everyone saying that they're junk and you should buy Ford (or whatever brand) that aside from the Euro-developed models (Focus, Fiesta, Transit) everything else we send over there is regarded in the same way we think of Daewoo.
