I've searched a big chunk of the past posts looking for insight on how to replace my water pump. I think what I realy need is a step by step guide (for dummies!) though I've done a couple water pumps on a Volvo and a chev. I can't seem to track down a Chilton or similar either.
Here are the facts:
87 F350 I6 4.9
water coming out the small hole at the bottom of the water pump
only drips when sitting but once the pressure is up while running water's hits the pully and coats the hood etc.
serpentine belt
fan cowling stampted "reverse thread"
ideally I'd like to use stock tools as there's little choice near me that offers loaners or rentals
She's a periodic use f350 stake truck that I bought cheap and would like to keep it that way.
You need a special wrench to take the fan off, then it's just four bolts and two hoses. You should be able to get the fan out without pulling the fan shroud, but if it has to come out that's just four small bolts (I think- been about ten years since I touched one of them new ones....)
You can probably get the wrenches ( When I did it there were two) from Autozone -- free tool loans. Otherwise you might have to pay a rental fee some other place.
Reverse thread SHOULD mean that its left hand thread. Fords come in both flavors, so they thoughtfully mark the engine. I think that they also have a couple of different size wrenches, so make sure that you get the right one.
The big deal is that you need a skinny wrench to fit into the space available.
A regular wrench is too fat.
It will be good and tight, but you should be able to get it. If you can't -- make sure that you're turning the right direction. I almost caused a hernia before I figured that out, when I did one
Anyway, Autozone.com might also have the directions for doing the job. If not, try your library. A lot of them have manuals -- ours even has a limited subscription to Alldata, that you can use in the library.
On my 300 block at least, the bottom water pump bolt threads straight into the water jacket. Be sure to put a little sealer on the threads for that bolt. I think the other 3 are just in the block. Just a little "gotcha."
Replaced the pump and tstat and all went well. Fan bolt came off easy as I drilled a hole in some flat stock, removed and replaced a pully bolt and used the flat stock that was bolted to the pully and a pair of water pump pliers.
This is one job that you don't really need special tools for.
If you have a strap wrench, use that to hold the pulley, and you should be able to slip a standard crescent wrench on the nut. You may even be able to get away with just using the serpentine belt tension to hold the pulley, but on mine, that wasn't enough. Maybe if you smack the end of the wrench to give more of an impact removal on the nut...
