Oil filter leaking

I have a '86 F-350 crew with a 6.9l has anybody else run into a problem with their oil filter leaking from the filter seal and oil filter housing mating point. This truck had no problem with leaks in this area until a recent oil change. Now I checked all the obvious, I bought two other filters and installed them and they leak. If I screw on the filter and fill up with oil I can watch the oil start to seep out. When its running it is much worse.

Are you going hand tight plus 1.5 turns when you install the new filter?

Mine leaks if I don't go that tight.

Yeah I found that out the hard way too every car I've ever done was as tight as you can get it by hand but if you do these like that it'll leak gotta give the extra turn and a half.

Different filters have different directions for tightening. 3/4 turn after contact for some, others call for one complete turn or more. How far did you tighten it, and have you tried to tighten it some more?

Well I can't say I have ever run into different tightening spec's but I will try when I get my hands on a large enough oil filter wrench. Come to think of it When I removed the old one (not installed by me) I had to brow a strap wrench to get it off I just thought that to much.

You have to tighten our filters much more then your average car... or it will leak or even worse just fall off on you.. use your filter wrench after you make sure there is not a old seal stuck up there... and tighten the filter good and tight.. it always takes two filter wreches to get mine off but it dont leak..

Its rare that I can get a full turn just by hand, since I don't usually get that mad and its awkward to get a good grip on it. Some say to hand tighten ONLY, but what really counts is the instructions on the side of the filter. Again, that usually calls for 1 full turn after contact of the rubber seal. By the time of the next change it will probably be sticky and a filter wrench will be needed to get it off again, but thats just a fact of life.

In my experiance these IDIs are the only thing I've had trouble with hand tightening. It works fine for me on anything from a T444E to a DT466 to a ISX to a 3406 to litle Isuzus but I may be able to get beter grip than most I can get the filters off of half the trucks I've done by hand If I realy wanted too. Not the Cats though they are nearly imposible with an oil filter wrench.

Mine is the same way. I have to really snug the thing down or it will drip oil out. I lost my strap wrench so last oil change I had to grab an old leather belt and crank the darn thing down with everything I had.

Be sure to follow tightening directions on filter, as overtightening will cause it to leak also. Just as bad as undertightening.
