Oil Bypass Mod
Nice install.
Couple questions:
1) How many microns is that short, sideways bypass filter?
2) Do you spill a lot of oil when you change that sideways filter?
3) Looks like it is rather tight to the end of it. Are you able to fit your filter wrench on that filter? Any problems getting it on or off?
4) If you are changing filters and oil every 5k-7k, aren't you defeating the purpose of the analysis and the bypass install? Or are you simply trying to figure out what oil/filter combo you want to work with and then will increase the period between changes? (I think that is what you were saying but just making sure.)
Thanks for the info.
Excellent questions. The changes are really easy.
1. IIRC, it is about 2-3 microns. That, though, is a question you can get lots of answers on, though, to be completely honest. The filter will capture some particles down to smaller microns, but at a lower efficiency rating. That's where it can be difficult to take one manufacturer's reported specifications and properly compare them to those from another. They all have to strike a balance between the efficiency point they want to advertise and the smallest micron rating that fits that particular efficiency value.
2. Sideways mounting is for simple convenience only - minimizing potential exposure to road hazards. The head bolts (one on each side) can be loosened to allow the unit to swing down to a completely vertical position for easy and simple access when changing the element. You just have to pla it out so that you allow enough extra hose length to accomodate that 90+ degree swing motion.
3. I believe that is addressed adeuqately in #2 above.
Once in the vertical orientation, you simply unscrew the cannister and remove the spiral wound inner filtration element. To minimize oil spillage potential, I loosen the cannister and then place a large one-gallon zip lock bag around it as I finish unscrewing it and drop it down for the change.
I also will do the same thing you're supposed to do with the full flow element... fill up the cannister with new oil and let it soak for about 15 minutes before re-installing. I've done it once without using that step, and it is no fun hearing your HPOP struggling for oil flow until it finally gets established some 45 seconds after ignition.
Ah. I see now. It swings down.
Very smart design with that install.
