gear box? You mean transmission?

if so...
Its always a good idea to change ALL fluids after coming in contact with deep water. Thats with Fords Chebbys Dodges Toyotas anything. If you friend regularly got water in his transmission and didnt change the fluid hes an idiot and he deserves the rebuild cost.

x2 stg,
oil is to reduce friction and heat in movin parts----i.e. trans,t-case,axles, etc.
water will displace oil and create problems vey quickly

no no no, if your gonna be in mud and watter alot, drain all the oil out of the transmissions transfercase and even the axles, and just run water. that way you dont have to worry about getting water in the oil.

Brilliant! Why didnt I think about that? You could always top it off with water wetter or similar to aid in cooling.

yeah dont use regular water out the hose. The sediment will settle in the bottom and damage the bearings. Use purified water like aquafina. The 20oz bottles are perfect for pouring into tight spaces like trannys and tcases.

A water softner also improves water viscosity for better wear protection.

Brita makes some decent water filters if you are worried about proper filtration.

I just had to throw this out there.

The Waterboy (1998) - Memorable quotes

Coach Klein: Gatorade not only quenches your thirst better, it tastes better too.
Bobby Boucher: No, you people are drinking the wrong water.
Coach Klein: Gatorade.
Bobby Boucher: H2O.
Coach Klein: Gatorade.
Bobby Boucher: H2O.
Coach Klein: [singing] Water sucks. It really, really sucks. Water sucks.
