I wondering about late model Chevy 4x4 trucks.
What is so special about Z71 4x4s versus those other Chevy trucks that just have 4x4 badges on the bedside?
Is the Z71 option a drivetrain or engine package, because all of the Chevys look about the same to me on the outside.
Thanks in advance.
It's a 4x4 offroad package. Not sure about what's in them, but probably just skid plates, maybe some mechanical stuff like a ls differential or special shocks. Nothing really special, just an advertising ploy.

The 'Z71' is a build code for Chevrolet.
It means: "We're putting this decal on your truck, so we can charge you more money."
Actually, it's supposed to be stiffer rate springs, stiffer shocks, wider rims, and a couple of other 'insignificant' items. (See first comment.)
and all the fun of having to come to a complete stop to shift into 4high, then having to wait a minute for the electric hubs to lock in. Oh yeah they also unlock when you turn the truck off.
they aren't that great off road, I got the ugly green thing stuck in the driveway, yes the DRIVEWAY.

General manager did the same thing once. Here's the key: it will not shift into 4WD while immobile, or going backwards. Forward motion is required. Dunno why you would have to stop to shift into 4Hi though- any time at any speed, and the hubs should lock in instantly. If they didn't....you were stopped. (ok,ok...don't hit me)

And in the alley behind my house almost after getting Ang's truck going, I was PLAYING in the alley with a new carb in a foot of snow in an 82 ford, while he was almost stuck in a brand new Chevy, I remember that.
My gosh, I guess newer isnt always better huh......
i think its skid plates, blistien shocks, and a LS rear diff
Well, us Ford guys would think that, right? But, so do most of the Chevy guys - they think when it says, "OFF ROAD" that it comes from the factory with an LS Diff. Not so.
Z71's are purty little trucks, though. I wouldn't mind getting one for my grandma. (As long as she don't take it off-road... )
