Just swapped in 4:10's
just wanted to say i swapped in some new sets of yukon 4:10 gears in my 95 f150 thats got the 302/4r70w combo. stock it had 3:31's. well just simply put the truck is a complete different animal now. i have 32/11.50/15 ssr swampers on it and with the 3:31's it was a real dog city driving it. now the low end torque feels great. its much more fun to drive and i know with the new 4:10's the transmissions is getting a little break too. i also put a set of hooker long tube headers on it at the same time and with the 2 mods its just great!! definitly a worth while swap!

Watch for transmission tailshaft lubrication modifications when running a low gear.
Because of the higher revolutions it's possible to starve the rear output bearrings in the transmission.
Some transmissions don't have this problem , but some like the C6 and especially the AOD will.

i was thinking of swapping my gears also but for maybe a 3:73. i'm also thinking of adding 32 inch tires. if i decided to go ahead with this mod, do you think i'd be better off with 3:73 or 4:10 like you have. i dont drive a whole lot on the highway but i do like to keep my gas mileage as high as possible. i have a 96 f150 4x4 with the 302. any suggestions? also if u dont mind, how much did new gears set you back?

Well it seem when you go for dependable power you often can't look for gas mileage with it.
I would stay with the lower gears, and consider the lubrication mods if any. they are relitivly simple to make. Usually requiring a lube port to be drilled out bigger and a line run from one of your transmissions output ports, to be connected to the tailshaft area.
I originally had a rebuilt AOD with an 8.8 - 3:55 stock rear end, and 33x12.50R15's on a stock rim. This truck is only 2 wd and I kept AT's on it.
With in 2 years of normal street driving I ate the first 2 clutches up in the AOD badly.
Thus why I swapped it out for the less costly much stronger C6.
I don't plan to drive this truck daily as I once did before, But when I need it.......
I drive a 1990 Geo Storm @35 MPG in todays economy and gas prices.
I would keep the 4:10, and look in to the lubrication modifications (if any). There much cheaper to make and install then a transmission.
Plus you can run 44's with a 4:10 gear if you wanted.
Here is another good spot to gain informaiton on transmissions and gears:
