Thanks for the info. If I stumble across one I might grab it - but I probably won't put much effort into it. I've been thinking about putting some auxillary light switches or something else in there to make it look like it serves a purpose. Either that or just cut an luminum plate to set behind and block the holes.

My seat swap

Yesterday I went to the junkyard and got a seat out of a 91 F150 XLT Lariat.
The old seat:

And the new seat:

Don't be fooled, its not perfect, it has a few cigarette holes in it and a small tear on the drivers side. It is now so much nicer to drive my truck now! It was very simple, just had to swap the slider brackets over and it bolted right in. Thought you guys might want to see.

That seat does look like it's in pretty good shape, not all broken down on one side. A Nice cover will cover up the holes. Nice find.

Thanks I thought so too. And it was only $50. I also got one of them silver gauge clusters that came out of the XLT Lariats and some nice napa cab lights. I am debating whether to get a 100mph speedo and swapping into this silver cluster or not. Opinions?

So as long as the cluster you have now matches the one you bought (as far as the gauges or idiot lights). Silver looks pretty good IMO. I was going to do that cluster swap with mine, but I found a nice cluster out of an econoline with the 85 MPh speedo so I went with that.

The gauge cluster I bought matches the one in my truck, gauges, same color circuit board, and I had thought about switching a 100mph speedometer into it, getting the white gauge kit and the blue LED kit, although I might not do the white gauge kit because it might be a little too much for me. I have to think about it, but am defiantly doing the LED's.

I put a 98 F-150 seat in my 78 SuperCab. Drilled new holes and shimmed here and there. All in all it worked pretty good but I wish I had it about 1/2" to the left. I feel like Im sitting too close to the end of the seat when driving. The good part is it feels about the same driving the 78 as my 99. Im 5'10" and It seems like it sits a little high but at my height it doesnt bother me. Besides Ive got a tilt column so I think that helps.
Edit: 78-79 Bronco bucket seats and console would be cool to have.

So how do you take apart the gauge cluster? I'm going to swap mine tomorrow to the silver one and want to retain the speedo in my truck because of the correct millage. And I want to take out the light bulb filters for when I go with the LED's.

That the same seat I put into my 78 F250. Easy to bolt in and I have not notice any issues with it being higher or sitting closer to the steering wheel. I am a little over 6ft so I have to bend down to see stop lights in most vehicles anyway. I would have liked to have headrests and maybe a little more lower back support, but it is comfortable on the back side and I like the fold down center arm rest. The seats seem to go for around $100 in good condition around here and it is a great improvement over stock.

I've got my eye on a 1993 XLT seat at the moment on eBay, but wait for it - starting bid is $375 Aussie dollars; I'd be extremely happy to pick one of these up for US$100. Finding one of these seats in Australia is extremely rare and getting one sent over from the US would probably another $375 in postage It would be nice to have some of that new seat comfort though.

Mounted bucket seats out of a Dodge daytona awhile back. It was very simple and and cost about 10 bucks for steel to do it. If you take the tracks off the original mounts and lay angle iron between them on front and rear you can mount just about anything you want in there, each moving independently. If you leave the original tracks and do the same you can move both at the same time or independently as well but this does cause a slight height variation. Angle iron from a bed frame is great for this as it is very rigid and light weight.

Like MikeWire, I too would like to know if anyone has had a problem with newer seats in a cab with a cab mounted fuel tank. Are there any clearance problems with the fuel tank?

Take a look at my Gallery. I have the tank behind the seat and 2003 Lariat seats with modified brackets

I really appreciate the info. Particularly the confirmation that the latter the seat year, the thicker the upright becomes. I can still slide most of the way back now and I like that.
I'm sure you're aware by now that at 6'4", your options are limited. I have 2003 60/40 Lariat leather seats in my 74, which I modified the 2003 brackets to make them sit lower in the cab. They also sit about 2" closer to the wheel when they are all the way back against the in cab tank. I'm a hair under 6', and I fit pretty good, but I did install a smaller steering wheel to help with clearance (a tilt column would be perfect). If I was any taller, it would get very tight with headroom, and leg room. Good luck with your project.
