Make sure you get a chance to sit in it. I ordered a aftermarket leather seat and the seat bottom was a good 2 inches shorter ....kind of annoying but liveable. I put 1" tube spacers under the seat to bring it up to stock height. I really like the seat warmers and adjustability(the seat reclines flat)
My first attempt has been made. I placed some nice captains chairs in my 78 regular cab because I wanted the fit of captains seats. (I also have a thing for custom "Good Times" style Vans.) Although I could adjust the height with tubes, I could never get use to sitting closer to the steering wheel; even with my classic Grant narrow dish steering wheel. My sub woofers are not an issue because I can slid my stock bench all the way back. The darned legs are just too long for that particular configuration. I pulled them and put the stock bench back in for now.
I tried a seat cover from Apex and it fit okay, but the seams that joined the tougher material from the thinner side material began to fail before I could even sit in it. And I definitely did hot have them pulled too tight. They are just poorly made/designed. So I am back at square one again.
My next thought is to have my bench reupholstered with some modifications. I want to ask the upholsterer is he can modify the padding so that the bench has curved up support for both the driver and passenger. Kind of like buckets and more modern seats. I don't know if this is possible or if it would cost a kings ransom but it would be a decent customization if I could have this done under new upholstery.
Has anyone ever tried this modification of their bench seat? I would also like to add folding armrests to the outside of the bench. Has anyone seen or done outside armrests on a bench?
I saw an artical some time back about Cobra seat covers. They have the built in supports like you want.It requiers you to re upolster your seat, but they looked mighty comfy.Might have to do a web search of ask your local seat guy if he knows how to find them.
