I have a 1991 f-150. I use the truck for work. I beefed up the springs and swaped the 302 with a 351w. I use it like a f-350. So no surprise when the rear axle gears busted.
What axles will bolt up to the f-150? The stronger the better.
If you are loading it up like that, you'd be better off with a Dana 60 out of an F250. You'll have the dreaded mixed lug pattern, but it beats breaking another 8.8 or even a 9. The housings don't like the heavy load and the brakes are small anyway.
Or you could buy the right size truck so you spend your time working instead of fixing.... You beef up the axle and you're just going to move on to the next weak link, like spring mounts, front axle, the frame...you know.
Thanks, I have to much into the truck to just junk it or sell it with a bad axle. It is a 4x4 so the front will have to get done also. The next weak link is the junk AOD trans. There are two donner trucks I am looking at. A 1993 f-250 or a 1992 bronco.
You might have "too much money" into your truck...but you are just going to keep sinking more and more into it until you will HAVE to replace it. Then you will be even deeper into the hole. Find a stock axle in the junkyard for cheap, then trade it in for a F350
i kinda agree ive thought about puting 1ton 4x4 axles under my 2wd f150 but i think it would acually be cheaper to sell the f150 and buy an 4x4 f350 ive seen a few that needed alittle work for really cheap plus youll get the beefier frame and transmission and they come with 351w but its your time and money do what you want with it
