So i just had a cousin of mine call me up and told me his truck wont start , that it will turn over but not start so i asked the basic questions.
1. Batterys (good)
2.Cps-(New)
3. fuel pump(working)
but he has already checked them out what else can i recomened him to try out next.
I always go back to the basics. Are you getting one of the main three? fuel, air and fire. In my experience the fire or spark is the one most likely to be faulty. Pull one of the spark plugs, ground it and see if you get fire. Go on to the rest and if any don't get fire then start working your way back, seeing where the voltage is lost. I will say this though, some say that you can hurt the ignition system by doing this, or send too much voltage to a computer and blow it. Usually I ground to the exhaust because it's there and I've never hurt anything doing it that way. If you're a little gun shy at this there is a less risky but in my experience less effective method.
Fuel can be found by smelling one of the spark plugs that you pulled. if it smells of gas, then you also don't have spark on the cylinder, but do have fuel. This works ok, but sometimes it has failed me where the spark test does not.
Air should be the easiest. So long as the throttle body is opening and the air cleaner isn't completely clogged then that should be fine. After that I look at the computer stuff.
I think someone may have taken a trip into the wrong section of the forum.
How's the oil level in the engine? Did he check the oil level in the HPOP? Maybe try unplugging the ICP to see if it will start. Were there any symptoms leading up to the no start condition?
Does he know for a fact the batteries are good, or do they just sound like they're turning the engine over fast enough? Does he know the new CPS is good? Does the glow plug light come on then go off after a few seconds like it's supposed to? All other dash lights functioning normally?
Yes, are the batteries good?! (like, what is the voltage reading) I got caught big-time by this one.... Replaced my CPS and then had a friend ask: "did you disconnect the batteries and check them separately?". I was reading 12.4 Volts, but one was 13.x and one was 8.x volts. ugh. a jump start proved this to be the problem...
The computer won't fire the injectors w/o achieving the minimum rpm's...
well the vechile is not exactly my cousins truck its just a friend of his and well i talked to him again and he said the did check out both batterys seperatly and did the basics ... he also mentioned that the owner had just recently filled up at a not so familar gas station and said after he filled up it started acting up. and once he shut the engine off it didnt turn on. It did turn over but not turn out and since he couldnt find out what was wrong they were going to have it towed and scaned. but i wanted to thank all u guys imput.
if you haven't already towed it in, I'd pull the fuel filter -- I've seen fuel bad enough to clog one within just a few miles. Also, drain it to make sure there wasn't a whole lot of water in that fuel, another possbility...
