YepI get the award.I just backed into a tree with the tailgate down.Destroyed it,I even bent up the Hinge mount on one side.I cant afford a new steel gate rite now.Any suggestions on those nets.Maybe even on with the blue oval or something.I haven't seen any just wondering if you have. Also any of those nets I should stay away from.
"Mythbusters" did a test for MPG. Tailgate up, tailgate down, tailgate removed, hard bed cover and net. Everything but the net tested out at essentially the same MPG. The net however decreased MPG. My 2 cents.

Didn't they use a Dakota or some other "mid-sized" truck for that test? Not that I think our SDs would be much different, but I do use a hard bad cover, for multiple reasons, and I love it.
If you don't carry anything in the bed and it won't be breaking any laws/ordinances, just get nekkid back there!
Maybe on of those bed-extender things could work... JC Whitney has "cargo bars/bed dividers" for ~$70+ - maybe that's within your budget and a better long-term solution?
Don't feel bad.. I destroyed 2 tail gates in 7 years..!! 1st one, tried to drive into my garage with a load of 14 ft 2X6's which were on the roof to the tail gate.. (destroyed the gutter also). Got a nice one from the salvage yard for $250, same color.. 2nd one, forgot to latch the utility trailer hitch coupler and started loading the trailer and it flew off the ball and rolled forward quickly and nailed the tail gate !.. Took the bad gate to the body shop, $375 dollars later... Next time I am going to Lowe"s... lol
Bruce... I get a sick feeling in my stomach just thinking about what happened. I pulled out of my parking space at work one night just a couple weeks after getting the truck, cut too close to the black vehicle on the passenger side that I did not see due to the darkness, and I'm still running around with a shallow caved in area in front of my right rear tire. The paintelss dent repair folks tell me they can fix it for about $250, though... just haven't had the time to get that taken care of.
Thanks for all the replies.I got some good Ideas.Going to check junk yards first. If not maybe jc Whitney.what happened was.I was doing a favor for the old man next door.I was backing out into the woods to drop the last load of a fallen tree I cut up for a him.the back was full of brush and I couldn't see.Should have taken the time to walk out and look.Oh well.
Don't feel bad; I did the same thing about a year ago with my F250; was helping a friend tow his Camaro on a flatbed trailer; it was not securely fastened to the ball of the hitch and when the car hit the trailer as it was being pushed up the ramps; YEP, the tongue of the trailer gouged a big ole dent right in the middle of my beautiful tailgate; found a brand new fifth-wheel type tailgate on Ebay for $100 and replaced it with that. Later, I found a regular tailgate for $100 off CraigsList and will now replace it because I am selling the F250 and it seems no one likes the 5th wheel type of tailgate.
Uliman, how did you like the fifth wheel tailgate. Was thinking that route if I cant find a real on cheap enough. And thanks to all for the responses.I guess its true what they say."no good deed goes unpunished"
