Need help regarding 1990 ranger

I am buying a 1990 2wd ranger,2.9l,auto, but it needs a few parts. I have a few questions.

It needs the whole front end assembly, ( Brakes, etc. ). What years interchange?

I need an ECU, but the part number is weird and I can't find one.. Does it have to be the exact ECU? B9k25

I've searched and searched, but I can't find a clear answer. I would REALLY appreciate any help.

Thanks,

-Dallas

About ECU interchangebility... There are some chips inside programmed for different vehicle parametrization. There are programm codes here: Ford Fuel Injection » EEC Program Codes

Well, you can use 3.0 ECU, but you will have to change wiring a bit. Look at wiring diagrams on autozone.com Sometimes it is easier to modify wiring a bit, add/remove/change some sensors then to get ECU was used with your engine....

I have '90 Ranger 3.0 ECU in my '89 aero and '95 taurus engine with '99 Scorpio ignition module, Volga tranny and some Volvo Truck and Mercedes sensors.... :-))

Do no use ECU for trucks with manuals, becouse OD and converter clutch will not work. My friend had to add 2 small switches in cabine to engage OD and Lock up.... Do not do his mistake.

There were ODB-II 2.9 ECUs. Possible to use too, but too many parts to change.

Read carefully about EEC-iV to EEC-V swap to be sure you can manage it.

Front end parts are interchangeble with many different ford cars and trucks, for exaple with Aerostar, Bronco-II and other, but crossmembers are different. Aerostar front end is wider then ranger for example. Use motorcraft parts catalogues to be sure, available on-line. Do not reuse caliper pins. Use new only.

Some of the companies that are FTE sponsors can help you find the front end parts. They should also be able to help you on the ECU. LMC Truck is another source for parts (not ECU). Brakes depend on whether you ave 2wd or 4wd, ABS or not. A lot of the sheet metal is the same from 89 thru 92. You may find a whole front clip at a salvage yard. A lot of it depends on what you need to suggest the best source.

All I need for the front end is the outer stuff. ( brakes.etc. The stuff the wheels bolt to.)

I found the parts at a Salvage yard for $130, which seems reasonable.

How do you check the ECU, or how do you know if it's bad? I just tossed some jumper cables to the battery, and tried to fire it. All of the electronics work, but when you turn it over it just clicks or wines at the solenoid.

At this point, I may just drop in a 351 and get rid of all of the wiring mess. It is a wiring nightmare as it sits. I'm not sure though... If I can get this straightened out I would be really happy.

Thanks guys,

-Dallas

The only way to check ECU - install, pull codes, clear codes, start engine, drive around subdivision to warm engine up, pull codes......

yeah, no autozone in europe.... But it is awailable over internet and there are men, who can send a small part via air plane...

Unfortunatly there is no so big company coverung so many brands in europe.... It is true...
Prices in Europe are higher then in the USA. To have salary in EU I want to spend it in the USA....

I've straightened out some of the wiring so far. I got the fuel pump working, replaced the starter and solenoid... now it turns over. It has spark, and is getting fuel, but it won't fire. I don't think the injector are working. Could a fried computer cause this?

Also, will an '87 front hub assy. fit on the '90? I don't know what else to call it. It's the outer parts that the wheels and brakes bolt to...

Thanks,

-Dallas

Homelessduck: are you getting spark at the plug end of each wire? Are the plugs good? It's possible the computer is partly bad but it could be something else that isn't letting the engine start and run. I'm not sure if the ignition module at the distributor sends a signal to the computer to tell it when to fire the injectors, or not but it might. On your front end parts, I believe the spindles from the 87 should work on the 90 I beams. To make sure, you could ask a wrecking yard to check the interchange listings they have for this application.
