I have an 84' f-150 with a 302. It currently has the original 2 barrell carb and intake on it. I want to change it to a 4 barrell. I would like to use an edelbrock performer intake with a Holley carb. Can I do this without failing emissions testing? I'm in Tennessee.
I'd go with a Weiand Action-Plus, and an Edelbrock 600 carb. I have this combo, and it didn't even come within 50% of the emissions standards on the test, and it gets over 13 MPG in my '77 LWB. Plus, with my cam and heads combo, it makes 378 ft*lbs of torque, and 330 HP. It's a great swap, and you'll improve your fuel milage. A Holley will in almost every case make you lose fuel milage, but sometimes they run great, but in any case it will not match the low-end torque and fuel milage of the Edelbrock, and can't touch the reliability and consistency of the P/N 1406 Edelbrock. This message is probably going to be attacked by everybody, especially 76RangerXLT, but I've owned both of them in identical cfm ratings, and for a street truck, there is no comparison, Edelbrock Rocks! For the manifold, I'd say that the Weiand is better, simply b/c it looks better, it's powdercoated form the factory, so it won't stain, unlike the Edelbrock. It's kind of funny, Weiand is made by Holley, so you were backwards. Go with Edelbrock for carbs, and Holley for manifolds, guys that have done dyno tests say they're better.
I am not gonna attack this post but I hav an edelbrock 600cfm (1406) carb and an edelbrock intake and I have not been impressed at all I have headers and an RV cam and still maybe only 260 horse and not much more tourque. I also installed an MSD ignition and a K&N air filter and still not the power I want.

What gear ratio are you running and what is your fuel mileage like? I am getting ready to light up an almost identical setup in my 53 F100. I have a 3.25 and a 3.70 gearset and curious where to start. I want decent fuel mileage and thats why I bought the Edelbrock package.
i'm going to take a little different approach on this subject. i would suggest that you become real comfortable with what the smog laws are in tenn.in nc most areas look for compliance and that begins with the decal located under the hood.one of the things that people toss when going from a 2 bbl to 4 is the factory air cleaner.i would suggest that all smog items should be maintained. a painted aluminum intake and 4 bbl look less obvious under the factory air cleaner.check with a inspection shop and make a list of what smog items are inspected and use that as your guide.
I have many emissions-illegal parts under my hood, and I passed emissions easier than when I had all the factory smog equipment, I'm talking when I had smog equipment, I just barely passed, now I laugh at the test, not even coming within 50%. I have an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, Weiand Action-plus intake, full length headers, NO MUFFLERS, high-flow cats, Widnsor Jr. Heads, and these are only the emissions-illegal parts that I have. Keep it well-tuned and you'll pass it easily.

i wouldnt argue the point that the aftermarket stuff performs better than most of the stock equipment. not knowing what the tenn inspection process or smog requirement is i would suggest to know the law prior to making changes.if he lives in an area that checks actual tail pipe emissions he could pass the tail pipe and fail the visual. either way you still failed.
Down here in AZ if the uneducated KID looks under the hood and sees ANYTHING AFTERMARKET he gets puzzled scared and about to pee his pants and immediately calls his supervisor over to take a look and fail you. I got failed for haveing an open K&N engine breather on my valve cover even though the pcv was connected and everything the guy wouldn't even test it he right away failed me. KNOW YOUR EMMISSIONS LAWS FIRST
so true in most parts of nc the visual inspection is the only type conducted. we have found that the egr and air systems are a must along with the stock style air breather. i have found that on non egr intakes that you can use edelbrocks egr spacer part number 8053 and then paint the intake the same color as the engine. its not as pretty as a fresh aluminum but seems to fly past the inspectors.
I found another way to get around the runnig test on the rollers down here in AZ since my truck is 4x4. I went to the junkyard and got a set of those old Dana 44 chrome hub covers and when I pull it in to emissions they look at the hubs and think it is full-time 4x4 and they can't test it on the rollers so they can only do the visual and idle test
