Gas leak when full

Gas leak when full
MY E-150 leaks a little gas for a while on the ground if I fill it to the top.
Should I be filling it less or could I have a serious problem that could be dangerous?
Sometimes guys say it is very common for this or that problem to occur so that is why I post without providing more info.
The van is a 1996.

I believe the fuel sending unit usually mounts through the top of the tank, and possibly the evap line as well. Filler neck is up there too. One of those is probably where the leak is coming from.
Now that you mention it, it seems like I've heard that too about Econolines. Your question was, though, if it is dangerous or not. If you have fuel escaping the vehicle, then yes, it is dangerous. Many states require a properly sealed fuel system as part of the safety inspection.
If you fill it up less, and that stops it from leaking, then of course there is less chance for fuel to escape. However, you still have the possibility of fuel sloshing around and making its way out. You also have a way for other elements to get into the tank.
If it were me, I'd fix it. Fuel is fuel; if it's getting out that's bad. I don't like to take chances when it comes to the fuel system. My 02.
