I have a 76 F-250 with twin gas tanks that have allows been slow to fill. I have to **** the gas fill nozzle and slowly fill the tank or fuel will ran down the side of the bed. This year truck has the exposed gas caps on the side of bed, no doors. Last year I replaced all the hoses on the main tank (rear) due to the large hose leaking. Due I have a venting problem with the tanks or is this a design problem with these models. Any help would be appreciated as I'm getting ready to replace the hoses on the front tank soon.
My '73 is the same way. I think it's in the design - or maybe the gas pumps have changed that much in the past 25+ years. The beds with fuel doors do not act this way. As far as I know, you have 2 choices: get a bed with fuel doors or deal with it - neither one is that great. That is why I have a '78 bed to swap onto my '73 when it gets painted...
Well, jrsroadhauze has a THIRD option; he can relocate the fuel filler into the bed like I am, put a corvette filler cap on it and pump 40 gallons of hi-test into it in less than 4 minutes.....that's what I'm planning on doing (natch, the bed will have to be modified, but I never use the space behind the wheel well anyway).
That hidden under the glass tannaeu cover and the door shaved from the fender should impress the local rocket scientists..
there are a couple different style tanks. when i had my 77 f-150 i never had a problem with filling it up, it had a vent pipe about 3/4 of an inch in diameter coming up right along side the filler tube. that tank rusted and i picked up another one which didnt have that vent outlet on it like the old one. the new one had a hole in the top with some stupid little valve in it, that accepted a 1/4 inch or so hose. i think this tank was for trucks equipped with all the egr stuff which my truck didnt have. anyway after putting in this new tank i had the same problem you guys are having. so my suggestion is find a tank that has the vent pipe coming out next to the filler tube.
i have always thought that that was just part of the truck. i kinda like it myself, it ticks off all of the guys in their show n shine trucks and suv's when they have to wait 10 minutes for me to fill up. most my buddys that have 70s model ford trucks have the same problem of it taking forever to fill. i think someone had a thread going on this subject a couple months ago. i think the best bet would be to find a tank that has a vent tube.
Northern Tool sells a 55 gallon, heavyduty poly tank for 395 that is designed to be mounted on the outside of the frame but it could just as well be mounted in a conventional pickup bed , i think. my 77 , f250, has a flatbed and i was going to mount it on the right side as i have a tool box on the left. fd
Thank You Gentelmen, I do have the 1/2" inside dia. hose for a vent on both tanks. Thanks for the options. The old girl is not driven more than 30 miles a week. Gas prices in central California are starting to come down some. 91 octane is $2.00/ gal.
