I just changed the rear fluid on a 97 F-250 with the Sterling axle. Had no problem filling fluid with the fill/check hole. I tried to do the same on my 1993 F-150, except I could NOT get the fill/check bolt out. I filled the diff 2.75qts through the VSS hole. None of the fluid has leaked out on the ground, so I know it's somewhere in the diff. Am I okay using this method?
I bet this is one of those times you wish you had tried to pull the plug before removing the cover right? If you have a good way to measure the amount of fluid going in and you are 100% sure of the capacity then it should be no problem. I have seen people fill trannies from the drain plug hole at the lube rack before when they couldn't get the fill plug out. This is something I would not recommend though.
you can get away with filling thru the vent tibe hole but make sure you know it is full and alot of times it will be a very slow process cuz the air needs to escapre while filling since you are filling thru the vent tube
Guys, My Haynes manual lists 2.75qts full on the 8.8" axle. I used 2 3/4 bottles of the fluid. I hope I'm at least darn close to the level.
Yeah, the fluid was still gold. If I knew I was going to go through this, I wouldn't have touched it. Oh well! Live and Learn! I appreciate the opinions!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-May-02 AT 10:42 PM (EST)]Quick question: when you take off the rear cover to drain it, there's a gasket there that needs to be replaced, correct?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-May-02 AT 12:48 PM (EST)]Uhhh, if your book said 2.75 quarts for the 8.8 than you are going to need ALOT more for the sterling 10.25!!! I am thinking more like 4-5 quarts! Especially if it is a full-float, cuz the outer bearings are lubed by the diff oil.
edit:
my bad, I thought you were having trouble with your F250, not the F150. Nevermind....
