Retrofit rear camera?

Good morning all,

I just purchased a new '08 F350 CC Lariet, 6.4/6-Speed. To say I am a bit jazzed would be an understatement. This truck rocks!

The one option it did not have on it, that I would have liked however, is the rear view camera w/in-mirror display. I remember seeing someplace (maybe here), that Ford now has a retrofit kit available for this factory option.

Also, the truck has a the nav system. Is there an input for a camera to that? The nav on my old Titan had that option, but I have not come across anything on the new truck yet.

Anybody have any information on this?

Thanks,
Doug

No retro-fit kit. Silly setup anyway. Surf to www.rvcams.net and buy whichever you like best. Tell them I sent you. Mount the camera under the tailgate on the bed which will help hooking up a trailer and will protect the camera. This will also allow you to remove the tailgate and still have the camera (a serious flaw in the Ford setup which puts the camera in the tailgate)

There is a NYC outfit who can modify the nav radio display to accept a camera input. This mod requires that you ship them the unit and pay $500. Mount an external monitor in the drop-down cup holder and save a truck payment.

My understanding is if your SD comes with the NAV system, then the backup camera displays there.

If you order the backup camera option...and do NOT have the NAV system, then it comes with the mirror option.

So...IMHO...You should be able to add a rear backup camera and have it display on your NAV screen.

Try contacting FTEPARTSGUY.COM . He is a sponsor here at FTE and is a FORD dealership in Bremerton, WA. See link...

Hope this helps...Good luck...and make sure to post back if it is possible. I am sure tons of FTE folks would appreciate it.

If you drive a GM that is how the camera displays. Delphi figured it our, Blue Oval did not.

The stock Ford camera displays on a special rear-view mirror.

This has been covered around here a time or two. Save yourself the aggravation and go aftermarket as suggested. Much higher quality, low-light capable, better monitor, etc. They may figure it out on the '09 when the radio switches to Sony.

I don't believe that is entirely correct??? FORD must have figured it out also on the Build #3. I was at the FORD website the other day doing the "build your own"...and the option was as I originally stated. If you go with the NAV then it displays on the NAV screen and no backup screen on the rear view mirror.

However...if you keep the stock stereo or go with the 6 disk changer stereo, then the backup feature is displayed on the rear view mirror.

Would be nice to hear from a Build #3 '08 SD with the NAV and backup camera option to confirm.

Here's a couple of choices for backup camera systems you can add to any vehicle:

Visor View Rear View & Backup Camera Systems

Boyo VTC461R Rear-view System Wireless rear-view camera and 6" color mirror monitor at Crutchfield.com

As I hit the button, it occurred to me that they might have changed it for Job 3. Not sure you'd be able to power the camera without the harness, and you still have the problem that the camera is on the tailgate, which renders the camera useless if you open the gate, or take it off. (as we do every winter when we hang the salt spreaders)

If you want it to look original, Get this : Rear Camera Display Mirror by Gentex

and then just get a nice camera that is affixed to the license plate bolts like this: MobileVideo4Less.com: License Plate Add-On Color Camera Fits ANY Car!

There have been many reports of interference from various RF sources including baby monitors on the wireless cameras. Go for a hardwire model with IR LED illumination.

Nice, but why would you do business with a company that chooses not to put pricing on their website?
