I've been shopping for a truck/suv to replace my 06 GTO and have been focusing on the Chev2500/F250 and the Ford Expedition and Excursion. My want is growing the for Excursion..
There is a used one in the area and I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the specs and price:
2000 Ford Excursion LTD 4x4:
Fully Loaded (they claim, not sure what options there were then)
Tan Leather Seating
Black with lower trim gold metallic
v10
Recent tires (haven't asked approx miles)
Battery
Tune-up
Grease, Oil, Filter and Wiper Blades (I assume this means recently done)
140k Miles (supposedly all highway w/ 3k oil change intervals)
$9700
From just doing a blue book search that seams like a decent price but the high miles concerns me. Are Excursions notorious for particular problems once they hit the 100-150k mile marker? How do the transmissions hold up? I'm wondering what everyones honest opinion is on this truck based on the above, and I am not mechanically inclined at all so any repairs that would be inevitable will be done in a shop.
At 140,000 miles, you could easily be looking at a transmission rebuild sometime in the near future. And I think you could possibly be looking at $3,500 to $4,000 to do this rebuild. That's my honest opinion.

Besides hoping I can get a guy I work with thats a mechanic to check the truck out for me, is there anything I should watch for? Just test drive it hard and see if it feels like its slipping?
I did a ebay search and it looks like I can get a rebuilt trans for about $1,500 delivered from Phoenix Re-manufactured so wouldn't it be a better option to go that route rather than pay a local shop to rebuild mine (assuming rates around here are $3,500-$4,000). I guess it would also depend on if I could pull in any favors to have it swapped or if I had to pay a shop hourly labor to swap it.
Another concern I had while reading around the forums is I noticed the consensus is that stock this truck is not built for towing because of the weak springs and rear sway bar.
The most I would be towing 99% of the time would be a ~ 77"x10' single axle utility trailer with ~2' sides and a rear gate that weighs just under 3,000lbs with two quads which as a pair have a dry weight of 648lbs; meaning 99% of the time I would be pulling no more than 4000lbs.
Would I need to make any modifications from stock to be happy with the handling of this truck with that setup? I'm a "newbie" to towing so honestly my biggest concern with this truck was getting good at backing the damn thing up until I read about the above issues.
What I was planning on doing if I decided to go this route was offer $8,000 and just leave it be if the offer is turned down. Would that be a more acceptable price point for that many miles? Not sure I could get it down to $7,000 or even $7,500. I've seen this same truck listed for $9,500 on another listing service.
I'm trying to get the VIN so I can get one of those OASIS reports. I am not familiar with them but it appears to be the tracking system used by ford to keep record of all services on a vehicle by VIN? If thats true then I should be able to see if its been a problem or not to the original owner.
I figured it would be way overkill to get an excursion but from what I've read it looks like the excursion gets the same mileage as the expedition. This makes little sense except the same thing applied to my car, the 6L 400hp GTO only gets 2-3mpg less than our Grand Prix which has a standard 3800 engine in it.
Assuming I am right that the excursion does get about the same mileage (~13mpg?) then the only reason I could think of to get a smaller vehicle would be to get one with less miles for the same price.
I am looking for an Excursion to tow my 7000 lb 33' Travel Trailer... that I have towed one season with my 04 Expy.
With the Expy, you can easily enjoy 18MPG highway and 15MPG rural (I don't know what a city is).
I have been real happy with the Expy, and am very reluctant to get rid of it. The main thing driving me to go to an Excursion is the 900lb tongue weight of my trailer and the payload of the Expy... not towing or stopping capacity. It tows like a dream.
I will consider the Expedition more, and probably even a regular truck. Something just drew me to the Excursion. I used to think they were just pointless and Ford wanting to say "we have the biggest" but the more I read the more I liked, especially after hearing what average mileage is achieved.
Those figures don't look too bad for the Expedition, EPA says 11city 15hwy but we know how accurate those always are. A guy I work with has a relative that had an Expy and she complained because she only got 8mpg and it was mostly highway, I'm thinking she must of had something wrong.
2001 Eddie Bauer Edt. just over 100k miles, 5.4L V8, 4WD, Green & Tan w/ Tan Leather Interior. Third Row seat, Rear Air, Moonroof. She is asking 10k but has been trying to sell it for at least 3 months so I would probably offer around 8k?
I'm probably going to go see the Excursion in person first before I considered something like this. Theres just something about the Excursion, but my opinion may change once I drive it.
