Novacoke, keep looking. I found that 2 things happened because I did not NEED the Ex right away -
1. I was able to wait to find ones that had the features I was looking for. Even though they are a little hard to find, one will come open.
2. Negoitiating the price was easier, as I was willing to walk away if I did not get it at the price I wanted to pay. Now, I bought mine at a dealer, but you still should be able to do this with a private party.
Based on what has been said here I think what I will do tomorrow is take the kbb and edmunds reports as well as printouts for models exactly like his for the same price but with less miles. I'm thinking about offering $7000 or $7500 (probably $7000 is what it sounds like I should offer).
About the transmission... is there anything I can do to be more sure that everything is OK? I'm not exactly sure what is the biggest thing to check for on a vehicle with this many miles. I am thinking about calling a local reputable transmission shop and see what they would charge to just inspect it but I'm guessing to know anything they would need to drain and open it which is a little invasive for checking out a vehicle prior to purchase.
I'm doubtful he would accept the offer so I'm also planning on getting more information from the listings that are 6 hours away and I might end up just spending $9k but with a little less miles.
If I take the VIN to the local Ford dealership will they run an OASIS report for me free?
Rear window needs new gas strut (anyone have a price guess?)
Steering wheel has the famous grungy look
Driver door speaker buzzes sometimes (maybe blown?)
In 3,500 miles it will burn up to 1/2qt of oil but passes emissions testing
1 bulb burned out on running board
The drivers door mirror is cracked near the base where it mounts to the door but still folds in/out fine (needs to fold it in/out to fit in the garage)
Accessory jack in rear cargo is missing cover
Asking price is $9500 and negotiable some. This certainly sounds like a better buy to me than this local one which has its fair share of points against it.
Thoughts? Thanks!
Edit: Should I have this checked out at a local shop before making the purchase?
I've been shopping for a truck/suv to replace my 06 GTO and have been focusing on the Chev2500/F250 and the Ford Expedition and Excursion. My want is growing the for Excursion..
There is a used one in the area and I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the specs and price:
2000 Ford Excursion LTD 4x4:
Fully Loaded (they claim, not sure what options there were then)
Tan Leather Seating
Black with lower trim gold metallic
v10
Recent tires (haven't asked approx miles)
Battery
Tune-up
Grease, Oil, Filter and Wiper Blades (I assume this means recently done)
140k Miles (supposedly all highway w/ 3k oil change intervals)
$9700
From just doing a blue book search that seams like a decent price but the high miles concerns me. Are Excursions notorious for particular problems once they hit the 100-150k mile marker? How do the transmissions hold up? I'm wondering what everyones honest opinion is on this truck based on the above, and I am not mechanically inclined at all so any repairs that would be inevitable will be done in a shop.
I am in the Muskegon, MI area.
Thanks
I dont know if you are stilllooking, but I found this in the Michigan Area in Craigslist 2000 Ford Excursion, ok this is my edit, it may be the one you already found

Still not a very good deal. Yes, you should have it checked out.
The tentative agreed on price is $9200. I looked on ebay and I did find some that looked like I might save ~$1000 but I am also afraid to buy on ebay because I can't just change my mind once I finally get to see it. The other factor is that for the good deals I saw I would have to drive across the country to get it.
I am going to have it inspected by a mechanic prior to purchasing it. The only item that concerns me is the gas strut which I would like to get a price on, the rest of them are not a big deal to me.
The carfax looks clean to me. There have been no accidents reported (unlike the past 2 I looked at). I called and got the OASIS report read to me from a nearby dealer; all recalls have been taken care of, besides that when it was new there was a loose ground causing crank issues that was fixed. They also replaced the rear passenger window switch, and rear clutch plates.
The service guy said the don't see these trucks in very often with the V10's but the one thing that does eventually happen with the super duty line is the need for new ball joints. He said the problem often happens around 60-80k but he has seen them with well over 100k without issue. He said on average the cost to replace all 4 is $900-$1000.
