That is exactly what drove me to buy an X. I really don't need such a large SUV. I have only one child. i have no pets. I have nothing to tow (Although I now have a vehicle that can pull say a boat if we ever buy one!!!). I just wanted an X.
With that said, this is a "Spare" vehicle and so i am lucky that i am not dependent on it. I garage it in the winter. I hardly put any miles on it. Really.... It's my hot rod so to speak!!!
I can see how the X can be a very pricey vehicle if it was driven regularly.
I figured it would be way overkill to get an excursion but from what I've read it looks like the excursion gets the same mileage as the expedition. This makes little sense except the same thing applied to my car, the 6L 400hp GTO only gets 2-3mpg less than our Grand Prix which has a standard 3800 engine in it.
Assuming I am right that the excursion does get about the same mileage (~13mpg?) then the only reason I could think of to get a smaller vehicle would be to get one with less miles for the same price.
I had an 03 Expy, loved it until we got a bigger travel trailer, Gas mileage was definatley better when not towing, but when towing the Expy was 6-9 depending on terrain worked the engine hard on the 5.4 liter, we upgraded to an 02 V10, huge difference while towing and much better gas mileage, and not working the engine to death. Overkill is not always a bad thing, it is what You are comfortable with IMO.

Cheers,
Some people buy sports cars and stuff as their hot rods! But you got an Excursion for your toy. Can we say you have a wayyy oversized baby (meaning the ex, not ur kid)! I do tow with mine, but if i didnt tow, id still keep it. i picture it as a oversized toy to lol

I suppose that logic makes sense, go from a fast toy to a big toy that can tow
2001 Eddie Bauer Edt. just over 100k miles, 5.4L V8, 4WD, Green & Tan w/ Tan Leather Interior. Third Row seat, Rear Air, Moonroof. She is asking 10k but has been trying to sell it for at least 3 months so I would probably offer around 8k?
I'm probably going to go see the Excursion in person first before I considered something like this. Theres just something about the Excursion, but my opinion may change once I drive it.
I'd offer $6,000, and only go with the 5.4 if you will not be towing anything major with it.
I think you mean the 4.6... those engines were pretty worthless in the Expy. That 5.4 is a great motor... good for more towing than the suspension can handle.
I was very surprised when I did the front brakes on my Expy... those calipers are HUGE! I have no concerns of stopping it or what I'm towing.
Alright I have some more information on the Excursion. This was used as regular transportation with oil changes every 3000 miles. The only thing towed with it was a 22' boat twice a year.
This is the VIN: 1FMU43SOYEB85532 if anyone could help me out with those CARFAX/OASIS reports.
Supposedly the previous owner was getting 13mpg local and 16.5mpg highway.
Thanks!

I probably should have included my email for those reports. patrick (@) patrickdonlin.com
I just looked at an Excursion that a dealership down the road has and I was pretty impressed looking up close. Seems like I remember them being taller than what this one was, I guess the other one I saw up close was probably lifted some.

Or its a 2wd? 2wd's are shoter in height from the factory then 4x4 ex's. What are the specs?
I had the Expy for several years, and it was a great tow vehicle for the pop-up that I had. It drove and handled great. I had the 5.4L 4X4 and jsut traded it in on the Excursion once I upgraded to a larger travel trailer. Although the new TT was within specs (barely) of what the Expy could handle, it took all it had (an MPG seemed to be negative!) to get up some of the passes. The key was both the trailer and the payload in the Expy. Once I loaded the trailer to approx. 7000 pounds (estimate based on dry weight plus added, not actual scale weight) and then loaded the Expy with 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 labs, it was working really hard! If it was not for that, I would have stayed with the Expy. With that being said, I have only owned the Ex for 2 weeks, haven't towed with it yet, and would not give it up! I now feel confident that I can go anywhere I want to towing the trailer!
BTW, I also agree that non towing, the Expy will have better gas mileage. I have found the Ex to be 4-5 mpg less in similar driving. I am sure that the mileage will be better when towing, which is what I bought it for. Good luck with your decision!
There is a good chance that my weight estimate was off because that is accounting for only my wife and I. Chances are, when we go quading that I will be hauling 3 quads as one person has no way to haul his (which is a bit heavier than ours) which means I will probably have to buy a bigger trailer (which also means more weight). With ~4 people plus a full trailer I still want plenty of room for hauling equipment and other goodies. Although it looks like the Expy and Ex have similar cargo space, the Ex just has more passenger room (legroom and nicer seats)?
