my fuel mileage is bad and comparing to what some friends are getting i decided to us the calculator here on FTE to find my gear ratios in 4th gear it shows that i have 4.56 ratios, in 5th gear i have 3.65 ratios does any of this make sense? I thought i had 4.10's HELP!
yes according to the tag on the door i have 4.10's but when you put all the numbers in the calculator (wheel diameter, rpm, and mph) i get a different number. i wonder if the difference is in my tranny?

Haven't heard from you in awhile. Just making sure you're still around.
I've been going to a monthly dinner meeting with a local diesel club. We meet in Caldwell at the chinese buffet. IDPisan (Jeff) introduced me to the club. They're a good bunch of folks (even though most of them drive Dodges and Chevys ).
also, if it says "Heavy Duty" under your F-X50 symbol you probably have 4.10's. if it says "XLT" then you do not. I know this is the way they did it on 97 F-250's, not sure about the other years.
The calculator is giving your final drive ratio which takes into account all of those numbers. Your axles gears are only part of the final drive equation. You are comparing apples to oranges.

My 96 says XLT in red letters and has 4.10s. Isn't the XLT a trim/interior package?
yes the XLT is the trim package. I have a 97 tho, and i think they only did the "heavy duty" thing in 97. My truck is XLT too, but it does not say XLT on the badge. this is just something me and my 2 other friends with 97's noticed with our trucks.
i think its just an emblem change due to year not equepment, on my title it says f-250 heavy duty its an xlt, i think all psd are "heavy duty" the non psd's 250's/350's are light duty with the gasser engin
