In '97 Ford made a "light duty" F-250 that had the new F-150 body style and a gass engine. That is why the '97 250's say HD. It does not designate diff size nor does the XLT. Look at the axle tag. It should be on the passenger side of the front axle on the back side of it.

like one of the previous guys said, that is giving you your final drive ratio and has no bearing on what ring gear you have. say you have 4.10 gears and a 4 speed manual tranny. 4th gear usually has a 1.0 ratio(in both a 4 speed and 5 speed). which means you multiply 4.10 X 1.0 and get a 4.10 final drive ratio. a 5 speed with overdrive is less than 1.0. something like .6. so you multiply 4.1 X .6 and get a 2.46 final drive ratio. all things being equal, on flat ground, not towing, etc. a 2.73 truck with a 4 speed will get worse gas mileage than a 4.10 with a 5 speed. 2.73 final drive versus 2.46.

Well, to give you the answer, you have 4.56 gears instead of 4.10. I realized it after I thought about my first reply lol. 4th gear is almost always a 1.0 ratio. and you have a 4.56 final drive in 4th gear. 4.56 x 1=4.56
5th gear must be a .8 ratio instead of the .6 like i was thinking. 4.56 x .8=3.65. which matches your number exactly.
