At 80K its starting to have a problem with 1st to second ,and 2nd to 3rd.At 30K miles (1st year ) I got a rather Distubingly nasty letter from ford about a "recall " on it . Gave me 5 days to bring it in.When I pressed them about why, they told me that the trany fluid "could cause irritaion to the skin of someone working on it" ! I have since heard that it was because of an anti wear additive used that was turning to sludge.I have pulled the pan and replaced the filter 2 more times since then just to be sure . Just recently I started haveing shifting problems.Shifts out of 1st and or 2nd and does not pick up higher gear.Mostly when its cold, but not allways.Seems erratic and like it may also be shifting late,at a higher RPM. It has allways seemed to drop out of overdrive to easily.I have to be extordinarly gentel with the gas pedel to keep it in OD on the freeway. Any sugestions ? Thanks *R*
Well...I'd find that nasty letter, get a hold of them and say "the letter I got from you about possible damage to my trany has become a realty then explain you delemia to them then ask "well, what are you going to do about it?"
They had the lawers working overtime on this one .The Letter is nasty in that they gave me a whole week to respond to it .Does not stat the reson for the recall. As I saidwhen I put alot of pressur on the Service Manager as to the resoan why I was simply told that the fluid could cause skin iritation to those working on it.Well ! Its more than just my skin thats irritated now ! I was hopeing there might be someone here with simaler problems with a 5R44E
Did you take the truck in to be serviced within the alloted time that they gave you?
Yes .This seemed rather unusual.I recieved a letter on may 25 ,2005 giveing me 3 days to get the 04B22 recall done . Mileage at the time was 24,684. I have since changed the filter and fluid 2 times. At 45,000 and 65,000. I skiped the standard 30,000 mile change as I was told by the service manager that they had done a complete fluid change."Because of an anti wear additive installed at the factory was irritating to the skin" I do not trust the service department at that dealership as far as I can throw them. I could tell you some whoppers about that !
From what I see of the 04B22 service bulletin, it was due to the wrong fluid being put in at the factory. I see nothing about "skin irritation" ,in fact, that sounds absurd.

Now is your problem a result of this? Maybe but who knows, lean on the dealer they may cut you a deal, probably not.
A trans failure at 80K is what people expect but it no doubt happens. Mine, 5R55E, lasted about 140K..
Ya ,its Bull. Ford is messed up these days.Dont get me started ranting ! LOL ! I am going to do a full flush and new filter tomorrow, see if if helps.I see there is a fix posted on here for the valve body seperator plate .Im not sure if its the right cure .I think I will try talking to the guys in the parts dept at the dealer.Im friendly with them and they seem quite bored and willing the key stuff into the computer and show me what comes up.Allthough every time I order parts there I seem to get the wrong thing! LOL! Dont get me started !I may soon be driveing my '64 ! at 10mpg ! Why did you say American car companies are in trouble?
Might want to check your O ring on the trans. filter for cuts. When mine was serviced it got cut when reinstalled . If you don't coat it with fluid and be cautious when installing it on filter and then bolting it to trans body it can be easy to put a slice in it. Mine acted awful when cold with delayed shifting. I got curious and pulled the pan found the problem and fixed it. I took the filter and gasket back to servicing dealer( transmission shop) and they refunded the cost of my flush/fill and trans filter change.
