I have a 2006 Escape xls 4cyl 5 speed manual transmission. I am having several problems with the transmission. When it is cold outside and you go to shift from 1st to 2nd the transmission will not go into 2nd sometimes and you have to put it back up into 1st then back to 2nd. When you shift from 1st to 2nd it does not shift smoothly...it sounds to me and you can feel it through the shifter like the gears are not meashing right but it only does it from 1st to 2nd. It also will make a slight grinding noise when shifting from 1st to 2nd sometimes. I shift at the intervals that ford reccomends and the only problem is from 1st to 2nd...no problems 3rd -5th gear. I have taken it to the dealer 2 times now. The first time they took it out and drove it-put it on the computer and said there was nothing wrong. The 2nd time the drove it and I drove it with them in the car and the person from the dealership said he herd the noise I was talking about so they kept it for a week and told me they were going to take out the transmission and look at it. After a week i got it back...they didn't take out the transmission they drove a similar escape and compared it to mine and they also talked to the ford service hotline engineer and gave it back to me and told me it was normal. Its still making the noise. The truck only has 3000 miles on it and the problem started around 1400 miles. Has anyone had the same or similar problems? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

My 2005 shifts smooth, I have 20k on mine. They do have 75w80 lube in them and it is a little stiff when cold. I live in SD and temps have been in the low 20's lately.

If that was my vehicle, it would be back at the dealer faster than a rabbit gets...well you know the rest...
Sounds like the sychronizers are not working properly, could be only an adjustment or as much as a new trans having to be installed. Best part it is all covered by your warranty..
I have taken my escape to my dealer one more time makeing this the 3rd return trip to the dealer. The dealer first said it didn't make any noise but i got them to finally say they once again herd something. They also said it was normal operation. I was not happy. I called Ford and they did nothing. I then took it to a second dealer(4th attempt at repair) who had it for a day and a half and you guessed it....they herd what the transmission was doing but said it was normal operation. When I asked both dealers if it was so normal why did it not do it when I bought it and they have no answer and try to side step the question. I have also driven 06 escapes with the same engine/transmission (4 cyl 5 speed tranny) when the dealer could find one (makes you wonder why they are so hard to find) and it made no noise and shifted smoothly. Since I can't get them to do anything I am taking the next step and filing a complaint with the better business bureau auto auto line which if you are not familiar will try to resolve the problem between Ford and myself. Stay tuned....
