What is confusing to me is that the oil pan I have is symmetriclal. The oil drain plug is at the deep end but both ends (where the gasket goes) are the same dimension and the bolt pattern is the same no matter which end goes where. So....does it matter which end goes where????
So I also have a 50 ford F1 (original post) and it has a mustang II cross member in it. Old 289 Engine was fit in the frame with tranny and all -Front Sump oil pan- 1/2 inch from the cross member. Drove the truck. Had to get a new engine- went to a 302 increased to a 306- block was exchanged. Front sump as well. Oil pan hits cross member. What changed? I was told the 289 and 302 blocks are identical on the outside.
I guess I have to convert to a rear sump configuration. So Is there a "kit" to convert my engine to a rear sump?
Yes there is a kit to go from front to rear sump.
Jegs has a rear sump conversion kit. It comes with a duel sump (rear) oil pan to fit the Fox body Mustangs (witch you can use in trucks as well...the oil pan), rear sump pick up, one peice rubber gaskit, Dip stick, & dip stick tube.
PN: 397-M-6675-A50........5.0L PAN............$99.99
JEGS number is 1-800-345-4545 if you have questions about it.
I got this for my '76 302 out of'a Granada with the front sump. The only complant I have is oil runs into the front sump when your going down hill causing your oil pressure to drop....other then that no complants.
HEY by the way does any company make a duel sump oil pick-up?
What you are looking for a oil pan from a Ford Truck F-150 or a Ford Van E-150. The Ford trucks have rear sumps while Ford cars have the front sump. As for the oil dipstick in the side......I think some 351W oil pans had the dipstick in the side but I'm not entieraly sure....
What I did with my front to rear sump swap is I didn't even worrie about moving the dipstick. I just bought a aftermarket oil pressure gaudge. And I go off of that as far as when I'm low on oil. Harbor Freight has oil psi gagues for farily cheep. & I doo beleave they are the full sweap gagues too!!
I'm currently in the search for a rear sump oil pan. I have a 72' F100SC that I am putting a 302 in from a 73' Mustang I had. Has anyone found a kit besides the jeg's swap kit? I'm not sure what this block originally came out of due to the Mustang's Title said "salvaged", also I took the car to Gulf Coast Engine rebuilder's and I think they just swapped blocks to save time. How do I find out what block I have?

I think you're confused on the function of a dipstick and an oil pressure gauge. The dipstick tells you how much oil is in your engine, and the gauge tells you what the oil pressure of the engine is. You can't tell how much oil is in the engine by looking at the gauge. In fact, if the gauge reads zero, you are starving the bearings of oil and causing damage, so by the time the gauge indicates a problem you are already causing damage.
Hello I am a newbie from Ontario CAN and I am currently working on a 1937 ford. I have a 302 and i believe it is out of a 1977 ford granada. I need a rear sump oil pan and I see the bronco pans are hard to find. Will any rear sump pan fit or do I need one from pre 1979?
thanks
It's going to depend on where the crossmember is on the '37 as to whether it will fit, I reckon. Worst case you'd have to buy a fancy brand name rear sump pan.
thanks for the reply. I saw those pans but it states they fit a 89-93 wasn't sure if that is only for the vehicle or block. Will any rear sump pan fit a 1977 302 block aside from clearance issues with cross member?
thanks
Any pan will fit the block, one thing to watch for is the dipstick tube. Truck blocks are drilled for a dipstick ~halfway back on the driver's side. Cars use a hole in the timing cover and may not be drilled for a rear sump pan dipstick tube.
I think i am going to order this kit M-6675-A50. I do have the dip stick in the timing cover and according to some other users you can just plug it.
thanks for the help
