Thumbs up

sounds like and ignition module to me...look for the infamous yellow dot of death on the face...if it ain't there it still may be bad, just take it to autozone and have it tested...eveytime i have had them go they always have weird symptoms like you are having.

Welcome to FTE

1990 F150 5.0 = Dizzy mounted ignition module, a POS since day one.

Several years ago, Ford recalled 5 million vehicles to replace them all.

E43Z-12A297-A .. Ignition Module (Motorcraft DY-425) Marked: E3EF-12A297-A1A; A2A

> > Ford suggested retail price: $160.24 / ftepartsguy.com price: $86.53

E8PZ-12A112-A .. Stator [aka pickup coil] (Motorcraft DU-30-A)

> > Ford suggested retail price: $74.44 / ftepartsguy.com price: $40.20

You'll need a thin shanked Torx driver to remove the module from the dizzy.

And, don't be a bit surprised if it tests out OK...HEAT is the enemy.

THE SCENARIO: The module overheats, engine dies, module cools down, engine restarts almost immediately.

Module overheats, engine dies, module cools down, engine restarts in about 30 minutes.

Module overheats, engine dies, module slowly cools down, engine won't restart for several hours.

Sooner or later, usually sooner, the module will overheat, burn out and the vehicle won't restart.

It's common practice at Ford dealers to replace the stator, also.

Don't forget the grounds to the TFI

They are on the radiator support top, behind the right side of the battery(looking at the windshield).
Theres a small bolt there that holds a few black wires . Take them loose and wire brush them clean.

I went through 4 TFI modules (even a $70 MSD version) in a year, before fixing the problem compleatly

I just recently had this same problem with my 95 F150 w/351. The problem with mine was the distributor gear was worn out and sometimes it would start and other times it wouldn't. I changed MAP sensor, Cap, rotor, wires, finally got a eec code reader and found out it was missing the PIP signal from the stator rotor INSIDE the distributor. When my mechanic took the distributor out to change the stator the gear was worn out.

Most likely it's either the ignition coil or the PIP inside the distributor. I would try a different coil first because it's cheaper and easier to change.
