My wifes 97' Expedition 4x w/5.4 triton and 106000 miles on it 3/4 of which are highway. Lately we have expierienced misfiring under a load like a slight hill or even just getting up to speed usually after 30mph. Anyhow we have'nt thrown any codes let alone a check engine light. I was told it might be water in the fuel (I use top brands Shell,76,chevron,only) could this be true? or maybe cracks in the rubber coil boots? Im sure im not the first to get these symptons so any enlightenment on this would be great, oh and i have poured in some heat in the gas tank still waiting for that to work it's way through.
you will probably have to wait for a CEL when dealing w/ a bad plug /coil
It takes a lot to set it off
Been there done that w/ the fuel pump/filter
u probably need to change the filter anyway so do it
when u get a code take it to Autozone and get them to read the code and tell you which cylinder it is
buy both the coil and plug and have a garage put it in
takes about 20 min
on my way to schucks auto to have the code pulled up, just about an hour ago the check engine light finally came on when my wife was out and about. woohoo
awesome let them tell you which cylinder and get a motorcraft plug and coil
please replace both
its silly to replace just the coil and not the $2 plug
take it to a non dealer garage and they should be able to do it for about 30-40 bucks depending on the location(#4 is the worst)
read the code and it's the #5 cylynder thats cuasing the problem, gonna test the coil and check for dring in the rubber boot before replacing the plug.

if the boot or coil is bad why not replace the $2 plug(it might be bad due to the misfiring coil
Okay so some of you wont approve my method of service. But anyhow I tried to replace the plugs and got to the first on and stopped before I even got it out, It would'nt come out with the amount of torque i was applying so I chickened out and Im having the dealer yes the dealer that I trust to do it, cost 400$ out the door. Anyhow after that I will replace each coil by myself and actually save some $$$ doing it.
Ouch $400 for a job you *might* not be able to accomplish yourself......crazy! Encountering resistance when trying to loosen the plugs is normal, especially if they've never been changed before. Just spray some penetrating oil on them and let them soak for a bit then give it another try. If you decide to give it another go and get the plugs out on your own remember to put anti-seize on the new ones before you install them.
