stripped oil drain plug???

I'm part way into the famous upper/lower intake manifold gasket and front cover gasket replacement job, and its getting worse every day.

day one; piece of cake, day two; five broken bolts- two holding the A/C comp bracket, two holding A/C comp to the bracket and one water pump bolt. day three; after fighting wth the broken bolts, only two remain.

I went to reinstall the Oil drain plug and it seemed "stripped". After closer inspection it appears a Heli-Coil has been installed but, it is messed up. I pulled the coil insert out with pliers and the drain plug hole is smooth. I thought it would be "tapped" / "threaded" to recieve the Heli-coil insert.

Anyone have an answer for this. If i do have to tap the oil pan will it need removed?

Thanks in advance. And like many have said this site does indeed

I don't know for sure if you'd have to remove the oil pan to tap new threads. Arguably you should to minimize the risk of metal pieces getting into the pan and possibly making their way through the system in the oil.
If all else fails, I guess you could somehow block that hole off permanently and make a new one.
Or, get a used pan from a junk yard.

Best of luck. Hope it goes well.

Thumbs up

Just use grease on the tap.Afterwards, buy some very cheap oil and and let it just drain straight thru, flushing out any metal shavings debris.

thanks for the help. I was just reading about removing the oil pan and it would be difficult for me since i do not have a hoist.

Grease and flush with cheap oil, got it.

I plan to do 3 short (less than 500 miles) oil and filter changes once everything is back together. And use Sea Foam during this time to clean the heads, man they look bad.

I had a machine shop "hot tank" the upper and lower intake manifolds- huge improvement.

I took pics but i'm not permitted to post them, don't know how to resolve that???

F4L956- hot tank- to be exact i'm not certain, the guy at the machine shop referred to the process as such. I assume it is a containter/tank of hot cleaning solution. Where parts can be submerged for several hours until clean or at least "cleaner"

My intake parts had a lot (in my opinion) of carbon build up inside the intake runners. after the "hot tank" both upper and lower are very clean, almost as good as new.

hope this helps answer your question. and BTW cost $30 for both parts

I get (two) expandable plugs like this (bring your drain plug for a size match, the reference photo isn't for a Ford) and use one while leaving the other in the glovebox. After plug number one shows wear after a few oil changes, you'll have the second handy. Beats the hassle of swapping the oil pan. Motormite also makes a universal plug.

Note that they come in MANY sizes, and are often referred to as pipe plugs or plumbers (very good for that too!) plugs. They will replace bad core/"freeze" plugs, which is nice when you can't get a straight shot to pound a new one in. Industrial supply houses carry them.
