Has been sitting for 5 years in the same place. I parked it under my shed and never got around to starting it. It has had water in the radiator the whole time. And when parked it was ok on oil and gas. Well now that i want to try to bring her back to life, when i tried to fire her straight up she wouldnt even spin. Now i know that the engine isnt locked up (tried to push start, and failed) and ive drained the old gas and water and replaced with new. But when i turn the key i am getting a clicking sound from my soleniod. When i touch the positive wire to the spade connecter it just clicks again. the starter isnt spinning. Now ive been told to replace the solenoid and ive got one ordered, and arriving in the mail soon. im hoping thats the only thing wrong there. But that doesnt solve all the problems. B/c when i tried to pull start it, the engine would spin but it wouldnt sound as if it was even trying to start. So im wondering if there is anything else that MUST be done before attempting to start it? Fuel filter is clear. Gas line is clear. Not sure about spark plugs or wires.
ive only tried to start it by jumping it from another vehicle. B/c the battery is completly dead and will not hold charge. (thought i could do without new battery till i new it would start). guessing i need to bank on getting one?
you cant necessarily expect a vehicle sitting for 5 yrs to fire right up. I would suggest putting new spark plugs, in and as dennis suggested oil them cylinders up and turn engine over via the crank bolt on front of engine with a socket and breaker bar so those cylinders are lubed and you dont break any rings. change the oil and filter. A new cap and rotor should be installed too. might as well install points and condenser if so equipped. battery charged and cables good? we just had a similar solenoid chatter thread and it was a bad positive cable. just to be sure replace the negative also. and 5 yr old gas is well, 5 yr old gas. I would dissconnect fuel line from tank side of pump.get a long length of fuel line and feed it into a gas can w/fresh gas.
ok thanks for the help.
ive replaced the old gas. and will lube up the cylinders and crank by bar couple times to losen and oil everything up. will reply will more news asap
you MUST use a fully charged battery, my truck sat for 6 months and i couldnt get it to start. put a fresh battery in and it fired right up. i tried jumping it with another truck with dual batteries and still no luck. fresh battery and "vroom"!

If your battery is dead and won't hold a charge, replace it or find someone with some good heavy jumper cables. The cheapie jumpers most people have won't start a vehicle with a junk battery.
i tried to start a car with a stone dead battery once with a 250 amp starter box couldn't get more than a few clicks out of it. i was finally able to start the car by removing the battery and using the engine starter box.
Did you even clean the battery posts before trying to boost it ?
You need to clean and secure all necessary items before putting the fire to it.
Went I prep my Mustang for starting after sitting more than 6 months, It takes me about 3 hours to get it ready for igniting the fuel.
If I don't take the time to pull the dist and spin the oil pump drive rod, I at least crank the engine with the plugs out to ensure those rings and cylinder walls are well lubed.
Take your time do it right and you shouldn't have any problems.
i see what you mean with the battery problem. getting a new one soon. i am getting plenty fuel to the carb, and trying to get new plugs and wires. thanks for the help, once again. im trying to fit some work in on her everyday. i normally only get less than 30 mins on her b/c of work and trying to race the sunlight. thanks though. will reply with more news
[quote=Mil1ion;6005106]You need to check the rotation by turning the crank with a breaker bar and socket...but remove the spark plugs first and squirt some transmission oil in the cylinders
I was talking to one of my pals and he said not to use transmission oil for some reason. im not sure why. he said just to use 10-30w synthetic oil. i wouldnt know the difference. so i figured id consult the experts. so what do you guys think?
