But, with the dual pump setup on the trucks, the low pressure pump in the tank only comes on for a few seconds, to prime the high pressure pump on the frame rails.
By bypassing the high pressure, and just running off the in tank pump, you will get low pressure to the motor, but only for a few seconds then the pump kicks off. To eliminate this, you have to bypass a relay under the dash.
as you said, installing a regulator up top would work just as well, with out having to bypass the relay.
i'm just about to do this, have a regulator on order, so i can hook up the supply line from the fuel pumps in the tanks, to the regulator then to the carb, correct? and i have the distributor from the 82 donor truck,(this is a 351w replacing a 302 in a 91 4x4) anything else i need? thanks
You need regulator that has dual outlets. Let me explain, If you use the stock electric pumps and do not provide a return line to the tanks, your pumps will burn up quickly. The low pressure pumps are no more than transfer pumps, they just get the fuel to the selector valve/resevoir. they were not made to handle constant max fuel pressure. Summit has one that is for a dual feed carb, adjustable. in from supply line, use one outlet to carb, the other to the return line to the tank. That provides a pressure relief to the pumps and make them last longer.
hey thanks for the dual outlet tip for the regulator, will be on look for that, will let you know how this turns out, hopefully it will run well and pull the trailer i now own, the 302 is so weak, i put pedal to the metal lots, if this doesn't work, i guess i'll be on look out for a new truck, drats! anyway thanks for the tips
