I already started a thread on this but I can't find it. I checked with NAPA on a replacement gear behind the guage panel because someone on here gave me the impression there was on to replace at the tranny and behind the panel. They said NO I would need to replace the whole gauge assembly fom a place like LMC. The needle still lunges but the ODO has stopped so I thought it was not the gear at the tranny or the cable because it still gives a speed. Can someone clarify so I know what to replace.
my 67 f 250 was doing that for a while until the speedo completely quit working. took off the entire cable and took it to napa just to match it up with new one. been working great since.
Ditto on the problem. Removed each end of th cable, pulled the metal cable out of the housing (would only come out several feet) cleaned and lightly lubed it. We did this a couple of times and it finally stopped the bounce.. Fortunately there was no damage to the cable housing or we would have replaced it.
Bookman, That is a problem, when you have a popular dummy posting 20 numbers for every post that he reads. He gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling armed with information to take to your local dummy for a problem that may not be diagnosed.
You in fact have a speedo cable inside of a cable housing that is connected to the speedometer on one end and a drive gear on the other. The cable or parts that it is connected to can get dry and need lubing, worn or broken and need replacing.
Many times the grease drys out in the dash area because of the heat buildup from the sun on the dash. I would try the above recommendations first.

If your ODO has stopped but the speedo still works, sounds to me that the cable is OK. You will need to fix/replace the speedometer head, which is just the speedometer and the ODO. I don't know if you can buy this assembly new. There used to be shops that would specialize in this type of repair but I don't know of any. I would check Hemmings. You might get lucky in a boneyard. While you have the instrument cluster out, pull the cable, check it for wear, lube it and put it back.
You wouldn't have to change out the whole guage cluster. Take the cluster apart and you will find the speedometer head is easily removed from the cluster, as are the rest of the guages.
If the speedometer driven gear at the end of the speedometer cable where it attaches to the trans is stripped, that can also cause either the speedometer needle to jump around, or not work at all.
The good news is, all the plastic speedometer gears are still available from Ford because the new trucks use the same ones.
There are 6 different driven gears: 16-17-18-19-20 or 21 teeth.
btw: The DRIVEN gear is at the end of the speedo cable, the DRIVE gear is on the transmissions output shaft.
You should only have to pull the gauge cluster out, unscrew the screws attaching the printed circuit and remove the printed circuitboard. Then simply remove the head. The last speedo head I bought was at a salvage yard. This salvage yard also guaranteed its operation or they would give me another one.
