Axle grease is petroleum based and it will swell the o-rings. Otherwise it would work just as well as silicone grease.

I don't mean to hijack, but what water pump should I avoid? I was looking at getting one from Oreilly Auto Parts or a Bosch Pump from Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto. Should I just go with this one from Ebay? eBay Motors: Ford 7.3 7.3L Powerstroke water pump assembly (item 330225742307 end time Apr-14-08 20:05:14 PDT)

Again, sorry to hijack, but it seems like the discussion has about ended. I just did a quick search and didn't find anything.

I bought oreilly's 120,000 miles ago,light grease on o-ring no leaks ,no runs, no errors
