In the process of changing the timing chain and when I look in the pan it is really gunked up and feel like it would be a good idea to clean it out and go ahead and replace the oil pump or at least clean the screen. Not having any pressure issues at this time but while I'm there think it would just be preventave maint.
My question is what can I jack against (of course after loosening the motor mounts) in order to remove the pan. Somehow the end of the crank just doesn't seem like a good idea but it's the only thing I can see that won't restrict the pan.
Have no way of lifting from above. I've jacked other vehicle engines (ie: the C word) b4 with no problem, lifted half of this one to put a motor mount in once but didn't try to lift entire engine.
You have a 2wd truck right? You don't need to jack the motor up, just unbolt all the oil pan bolts, let it rest on the crossmember and then reach in and unbolt the oil pump, VOILA! Pan is off.
I just had a thought?
what if you do jack it up from under the pan with a board on top of your jack
then block it up under the mounts to hold it up there to remove the jack and the pan?
might work
Unbolted the motor mounts, put a small barrel jack in between the cross member and the bottom of the motor mount and jacked up about 1" maybe 1 1/2" unbolted the pump and pulled the pan and pump out together. Cleaned up the pan, and reversed the process. Stabbing the distributor was a challenge but couple words Momma wouldn't want to hear, and a couple of beer/smoke breaks, and she decided to cooperate.
Ditto on buying the hoist. I paid $159.99 for mine out here in Oregon. Since then I have used it for way more than its attended use and it is not limited to just lifting engines. I got one where the legs fold up so it takes up very little space in my garage.
It's a 2wd truck, no need to create more work that necassary, just unbolt the pan then unbolt the pump and take it all out together, how hard can that be?
Of course do not forget to take out the distributor and then remove the pump driveshaft.
do you need to remove the dist.?
there should be a retainer on the pump drive that holds it in place
did not remove either to remove pan on my 76 4x4
in fact, at the time just sat on the ground and removed pan and pump
had to do that to get one piston out that had a knocked out wrist pin bushing, well that and one head
