Hi all, I did a search but did not come up with a definate size,Seemed to be
different suggestions...1 13/16,46 mm,1 5/16 ??? Any one know for sure
which size socket I need ..6 point ,12 point ???
Thanks in advance ,I appreciate the help Jim
I measured mine at 1 5/16". Either socket should work as long as it is a heavy wall.
Should come loose fairly easy with some effort from a long ratchet, breaker bar or 1/2" impact wrench.
I'm not sure the exact size, but since Roland measured his, I have no reason do doubt that.
As for the socket, I prefer the 6 point. It has a larger surface area to grip the nut and you're less likely to round one off. That could be especially important on the pitman arm with as much torque that is put on it to tighten it. I'll use 6 points wherever I can on everything.
The biggest problem, with removal of the arm, is the taper of the pitman shaft and arm socket. It can be wedged on pretty tight. The nut is not usually the problem with removal. A puller is sometimes needed. A BFH is sometimes used, but not recommended to hit too much on the arm and shaft. I do agree on the six point. I use them as much as possible. Most of my sockets are six point.
Thanks guys,I appreciate the help !! The one and five sixteenth was the
right one,It was not easy though ...Even with a two foot breaker bar it was tough .The pitman arm itself was so worn it pretty much just dropped off but the bottom of it to the drag link was a different story. I had a lot of play in the steering and once I went for a test drive it felt like I was driving a new truck. Thanks for all your help,Always appreciated...You guys are the best !!!
