i just replaced my brakes all the way around even calipers now let me say this is my first attempt to do brake work.well when it was all done i took it out for a test drive everything seemed to be well for about a mile and then it seemed like i lost alot of power but soon figures out that my right front brake was locking up so i turned around and barely made it home smoke was coming out around my wheel.so i pulled the wheel checked the rotor it wouldnt trun whats so ever so after it cooled some i pulled the caliper off and found nothing wrong that i could see so placed it back on and went for anohter test drive and it never locked up again so can anyone tell me what happened
Just a heads up. Details are needed for correct response (year, make, model, and in this case? Double piston or single piston calipers)
It's not uncommon for even rebuilt calipers to be bad out of the box. Who knows how long these rebuilt units have been siting around the partshouse or warehouse? From the sounds of it...if this is a single piston caliper--either the seal needed to be worked 'in and out' a few times...or the caliper retaining key was not correctly lubed up or installed wrong. If it's a double piston caliper? It rides on a set of pins that need to be inspected and cleaned/lubed for the caliper to work correctly.
If it's working fine now? I'd suspect the caliper was sitting on the shelf a bit to long, and the seals where a bit dried out. It might not do this action again---but retain your receipt for the parts, as most offer a warranty.
Some people don't realize that there is a special compound sprayed on cast iron brake parts to keep them from rusting in the box.
This compound has to be removed with brake cleaner before installation to prevent weird things from happening during operation.
