Drama queen on trip...
My truck, that is. 2005 PSD 6.0 is normally flawless, but I've only put 4,000 km on it in the last 8 months - bad on me! On a trip towing an enclosed race car trailer, around 7K lbs over pretty hilly terrain, up to 9% grades. Nova Scotia to Mont Tremblant Quebec for those who know the area. First thing is the truck is pulling OK but boost seems a little low and it's shifting kind of funny. Hard to get it to kick down. Then, on a fairly steep hill, it does kick down into third at pretty high throttle, rpms pop up to around 3500, and I get a Wrench light and no power. Top of the hill I pull over and turn the engine off and on, light is gone and back to normal. Happens again, this time I notice the boost had popped to over 30 psi and I now know what's happened - not driving the truck has let the VGT vanes in the turbo get sticky and I'm getting overboost alarms. No problem, I can control that with my right foot and no alarms since.
Now, today coming down from Mont Tremblant towards Montreal, very intense rain, major stop and go traffic on a pretty steep and long downhill run, and the right front caliper locks up. I start to get lots of pull, some smoke and pull over. I let the smoke stop, and start out going very slow, braking with the trailer brakes and downshifting manually (with the turbo vanes sticking your tow/haul engine brake goes right away) and off at the next exit. Take temps with my I/R gun and the left front is 750 degrees! We go in to the restaurant to have a sandwich and a beer and let it cool down so I can take a look at it. an hour later I jack it up and spin the wheel, and it is completely free! No longer seized. I pull the wheel off and check the caliper, all the pads are free (I did rotors and pads around 6K km ago) and the pistons are moving OK so the caliper seems to have gotten over it's hissy fit. Now, around 500 km later, no issues and the left front seems to be running around 20 degrees F hotter than the right, so dragging but not bad. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, around 1,000 km (600 miles) to get home.
