I just bought a 2006 4x4 crew cab FX4 Lariat with a 6 inch lift and 35 inch Toyo tires. The tires hum pretty good going down the freeway. What do you all suggest for a new set of tires, to get rid of the hum. I like the looks of them, just a little to loud.
Thanks
I would recommend just changing the tread pattern. If they are too loud it means that the tread pattern is maybe too aggressive...any tire can be less noisy by having a more highway tread. I have a 2004 F-350 with 265-75-16's on it now and I need some new tires...I'm looking at 285-75-16's. Thats equivalent to about a 33" tire. When I look I'll look at tread pattern, maybe 5 tread across, and the sipes on the side, or slits...These help to disberse the sound and also rain or weather to the sides and away to keep the tire from hydroplaning on puddles. The load range is a bid deal as well. Most big trucks use a 10 ply or load range E which takes 80 pounds of air pressure. This is a stiffer tire so it doesn't absorb as much of the noise, it sends it out and the air comes off of it and the noise from the road. If you don't haul much, go for an 8 ply, load range D which is 65 psi, and still heavy enough to haul most anything you need. Hope this helps...I am looking at getting some tires, if you get rid of the 35's let me know if they are 16" rim. Would they fit your truck stock, or is that lift necessary? Thanks again.
Loud? No freaking way.. I got 35" Toyo MT's and mine are QUIET.. Compared to other Mud Terrains on the market.. I love my Toyo's.. They don't get stuck LOL
Speaking of it.. How much air are you running? It took me FOREVER to get mine right.. I've found 44psi front and 39psi rear to be perfect.. Not too stiff, not too squishy, not really loud.. First time I got em I had them throw 60psi in all the way around.. I thought I was driving a tank.. Talk about bouncing around LOL
Storm...depending on the load range tire you have, running them that low can cause the outside of the tires to prematurely wear out...just keep an eye on it. The tire runs lower and wider which pushed out more on the sidewall and outside edges of the tire....

I've got E-Load.. So far 15k miles, no uneven wear.. I did the chalk test 5 times to confirm I had an even grab across it.. If I pull a load I put more air in.. Right now completely empty, its pretty good..
That PSI is bout equal weight that the stock tires run at 60psi. Based on Toyo's PSI = Weight Handling chart..
Honestly it was the guys here that helped me.. When I first got em I threw 60psi in.. Talk about rough ride.. Then I put too low in and when I'd corner I thought I felt like I was on ice.. Finally about 9 people told me.. GO DO THE CHALK TEST! lol.. Finally figured it out and did it.. Which is good considering they are $230/ea tires LOL..

I have my 33" toyos at 60psi. I think the max psi is 65. Even at this psi they still run smoother than my stock bfg's at's. How did decreasing pressure effect your MPG and you road noise?

What's that?
You take a piece of chalk and run it across your tread.. Then drive a few rotations.. If all the chalk is gone your tires are pretty close to good where your tread will wear even..
