Can the NEW back up camera be added??

Hello

Just wondering if the NEW back up camera on the late o7s ans o8s in the tailgate handle can be added to the older models . I have a 06 King ranch . I see they are selling the rear view mirror with the screen in it.

Backup Camera

The factory camera probably could be installed, but I bet you will end up paying out the nose for it. I found a wireless after-market camera kit at Walmart for $99.00. The camera mounts on your license plate and gets power from your backup lamp. The LCD screen plugs into the power plug/lighter socket and mounts on the dash with velcro. It works well, except when you the occasional signal interferance.

Does anyone know if you can get just the handle that the camera goes into? I Have an aftermarket head unit with a video screen in my truck, and I Have the reverse camera mounted to the liscense plate. I would like to move it up to the handle if possible. Thanks. Jason

I would like a dealer could get you the handle for the camera and then you could relocate your camera.

i want to try parting it all together. the goal would be to make it cheaper than 100 bucks

for instance . . . buy a cheap button camera . . . one for outside (all weather etc) and wire it to the reverse lights so it only comes on when you put it in reverse. the issue would be the screen.

do i give it constant power? (dont think i could/should run it AND the camera off of the reverse lights wiring)

if i do, what will it display when not in reverse mode?

could i splice into a gps display and have switch turn the image from gps screen to reverse camera whenever i put it in reverse?

hmm

where would i place it

etc etc

sounds like keeping it under 100 bucks would be difficult (i say under 100 since you can get one for 100 bucks like jlykins did)

thought it could be made custom so it works the way -I- want it to.

wireless though huh? interesting
could be reinforced somehow with some sort of wireless signal amplifier? what does it run at, do you know jlykins? is it a nice display? model number/brand?

thanks

sorry for the hijack . . . here is my contribution to the original post to make up for it

what if you get just the handle from one of these ebay sellers that are doing aftermarket chrome handles? i dont know if anyone makes them yet but you could just get the one with the camera hole and cut it out of your original handle. unless its only a few more bucks through the dealer, i think it would be worth it and you might save some dough

Back up camera's? Got a hard time turning your neck? How long a vehicle ya drivin? Do you wear a skirt? Really need to see what your bumper is going to back into? Do you use one on the back of your boat trailer to make sure the boat is in the water before you stop?

Maybe he wears a kilt? Sorry, no insult intended. A wireless back-up camera would be great if it could be incorporated into the handle or tailgate logo. That way you wouldn't need to depend on someone else to tell you if you are close enough to the trailer or wall. Keep up the thread and let us know how you make out.

It would be nice if I had a trailer that I could back into like a 5th wheel, but my hitch has a ball on it. Glad my boat trailer isn't that heavy.
