Poor Mpg
I have a 92 F-350 with a naturally aspirated 7.3 and an e4od with 4.11 running gear. I drive like a grandma and still only get bout 13 mpg. It has 180000 miles on it now. My dad said that the best he has got was 16 mpg is this normal?
A couple basics come to mind
When was the last time the injectors were serviced?
Do you know what your exhaust gas temp is? (Timing?)
What kind of milage are you expecting, or working towards?
0.02$ from the peanut gallery

The best I've ever been able to get with 4.10 gears is 14 mpg on flat ground, trying to stay below 60. Around town and on the highway, I consistently get 11-12 mpg. But the injectors need to be replaced.

What sort of driving cycle are we talking about here? short trips? average speed? distance?
With my 91 dually with an E4od, I get as bad as 11 in the city to as much as 18+ at 55 on the interstate (it's hard to drive that slow, though).
Is the air cleaner clean?
Is there a noticible diesel "rattle" when you start it cold which goes away after it warms up a bit? That would indicate that the timing is "about right".

Mine has (as far as I can tell the original injectors), E4OD, 3.55:1 rear end gear, and most likely over 200,000 miles on it, and I get 13 mpg in the winter with a few thousand LBS of snow in the bed, 1/3 high speed freeway driving, mirrors out, the radiator grill blocked off, and my foot in the throttle enough to keep up with most traffic.
In the summer I got 15+ but not much steady freeway driving and, as always, with my foot in it more often than not.
I'd bet on 18+ish if I were going 55 on the freeway maintaining a steady speed, and with those huge mirrors on both sides folded in and a bed cover or camper shell even with the roof.
Those big mirrors, huge open grill, and open pickup bed, slow you down and eat up fuel with drag big time.
Blocking the grill has not caused me any engine temp problems so far, but I don't pull any loads, much less any heavy loads.
Also, those 4.11:1 gears keep the rpm's up much higher than needed for good mileage as they were optioned for pulling heavier loads and higher CGVW ratings, not getting good mileage.
I also saw a guy at the shorewood Home Depot that made a shell that started even with the roof of the cab but curved down to even with the closed tail gate, and I'll bet that would be better than a standard straight shell or bed liner!
This summer I think I'll make one like that myself.

I get around 13-14 with mine but I have no overdrive and 4.10 gears so she's wound up pretty good at cruise speeds. You probably don't get into 4th gear too much around town so 13 isn't that far off. If it doesn't improve much on the freeway then you may have something goin on.
