302 going bad?

well, my engine yesterday, started having problems, during acceleration, it has a noticeable loss in power, and it misses real bad, bad enough that the gear shift flops around!
and it makes a hissing kinda sound in the exhaus, like a leak, but it comes from the end of the pipe, but it doesn't smoke, the oil looks clean.
it has 180,000 miles on it.
i havnt checked the plugs yet, i put new ones on about a month ago, but the wires are cheap walmart things, dunno how good they are, i figure i'll pull the plugs and inspect em, maybe one isnt firing.
now, i have another question...
i have a 302 block in my garage, if i bore it .030 and use my truck crank and heads, could i use it?
and, i have this 351 cam, dunno the specifics right yet, will post em later this afternoon, but could i run it in there too?
the guy i got the cam from *said* it was pretty dang hot cam.
i aint tryin to make a top fuel motor, just use some parts laying around here lol

302 going bad?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Sep-02 AT 04:18 PM (EST)]pulled all the plugs, all clean, no oil or carbon, all a uniform color, makes me wonder if i have a lifter that isn't opening a valve all the way...

302 going bad?

you should be able to use the entire rotating assembly from you truck in the other 302 block you have, your intake will also work (efi or carb'd) you might have to swap valve covers or buy new ones to fit a pcv valve into.(i'm thinking late 80's efi 302's here.) someone will know about that cam you have when you post specs and tell you if it will work. but in general your idea sounds very do-able. good luck!

302 going bad?

somewhere in all that, i forgot to add that the truck is a '92
i was thinking of maybe using everything but the block to keep costs down, but then again, it'd cost about the same, 'cause i'm sure both blocks need a bore job.
the only thing that really sucks is i really don't have the $$ to re-build it right now, i'd like to give it a bit more power, but it isn't a "must have" lol
i also have a set of edelbrock signature series valve covers, wonder if they'd fit and clear the intake or it's brace on the pass. side...
they look decent, and they're clean...heck, im just ramblin' now :-)

302 going bad?

Don't know just how hot your 351W cam is, but years ago we put a stock '69 351W cam into an old 289, had to change fireing order to the 351 I think, but it made a difference in the 289s performance.

yeah i was aware that i had to change to change to 5.0 HO/351w firing order to do the cam swap, thanks for the advice tho :-)
btw, anybody ever do a .030 overbore and a stock rebuild on a efi 302? what kinda power did ya get?
mileage?
lol i know these are moot questions, but im curious if anybody has done it before......

302 going bad?

i have 2 302 blocks, both grimy, and greasy as all get out, but one doesn't have any noticeable ring-ridge, i think it's the one im gonna "build". (should money magically appear, lol)
now, this is a stupid question, but whats the firing oreder of a 302 HO?
someone has told me that it IS different than a 351w....
all i wanna do is run that windsor cam in the 302, other than that
its gonna be a stock rebuild.
seeing as i dont have a device to measure the bore (forget what its called, been to long since auto class in HS) im gonna have to rent/borrow one from Oreillys sometime soon...ahhh yes, May The Fords be With You!
(corny yes, but who in heck cares!)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Sep-02 AT 00:28 AM (EST)]that would be the one i'd build too..clean it up and get it ready for the machining and you'll have less money spent at the machine shop for them to do it for you.

i think the 302 HO is the same as the stock firing order for a 351w im pretty sure it is, i'll ask my brother tomorrow and get back to you.

also sounds like the tool you need is a dial indicator to check the bores with, if im not mistaken.

sounds like a nice ride, just now to appropriate funds!

The 302HO and the 351 share firing orders: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.

"during acceleration, it has a noticeable loss in power, and it misses real bad, bad enough that the gear shift flops around!

Does the truck still have the Cat/s on it. If so, you may want to check & make sure that they are not stopped up. I have worked on several vechicles that had the same problems that you described above.
If the cat is clogged/stopped up, the engine can not breath properly & therefore will not run properly. IE.. missing under a load, hissing noise from the exhaust.

If you have not already taken the engine apart, you can check this by starting the engine then going to the rear of the truck & placing you hand at the end of the exhaust pipe. You're wanting to see if the exhaust is breathing good. If it does not feel like any exhaust is coming out or very little is coming out, try replacing the cat's before rebuilding an engine. Also with the engine running & warmed up look under the truck & see if the cat is glowing (red hot) if it is then have it replaced.

Just a thought..

302 going bad?

hey!
thanks for the tip, i just got home in it awhile ago, it did feel awful hot on my legs when i got out, gonna go start it up again in a sec. and let it run, see if they do get red hot.
i know 180,000 miles is not that many miles by todays standards(with good driving, maintenence, blah blah)
but my engine is kinda weak, so im gonna check the cat(s)...
and continue with plans to rebuild, just hopefully not as soon as i thought :-)

You may not be able to use your 351w cam. You said it was hot so you it may not have enough vacumn to run your computer. A cam I would recommend is the Comp 31-255-5 cam. Suppose to work great with EFi speed density.
