I think the rangers had either a d28 with the smaller engine or a d35 with the bigger engine, while all explorers had the d35.
As far as I know they will bolt in place of each other - but this is based off vague memory of someone upgrading to a 35 in their ranger - I wouldn't spend any money based on what I said without someone else confirming it.
Well, when I get back, the TTB will leave its home in my F150 to fit in some sort of solid front axle. That leaves me with a D44 TTB laying around that could use a new home...
There was someone on here that did this before I think - I can't remember exactly, but I think it was a long travel dessert truck or something like that..
yea ive heard thats the only thing the ttb is really good for is long travel high speed applications, (off road) my ttb is alright on road, damn front springs are worn so ive got to replace them now my tires got this **** squat when i park after reversing. LAME!
Up to 88 all Rangers and BIIs had the D28. The D35 started in 89 but there was also a hybrid D28/35, which has 28 guts in a 35 beam, you only find this with 3.45 gears and good chance there will be a 7.5 rear axle too. The Explorer will have a D35 reguardless. As far as swapping a D44 TTB, not too much problem. The most involved part is the steering. For the springs you can either move the springs in on the axle or what most people do is space the coil buckets out with plate. The beams will bolt into your stock pivots. It's not as bad as you think.
Its common to hear it said about the war that it isnt all about killing the enemy, but winning the hearts and minds of the civilian population, putting a spin on that with "two (bullets) in the heart, one (bullet) in the mind" (not referring to killing civilians, mind you.)
Anyway, back to the truck...
I already have a truck (95 F150) so I dont really need a ranger, would be kinda redundant, thats why I will be looking for an Explorer. The extra seating capacity would be fun for off-roading.
I would probably grab a matching 8.8 or something to make the gearing issue simpler. A D44 TTB would add an extra 4 inches per side and give you the track width of a fullsize with a 110"ish wheelbase. How does that sound?
