I got a 1911 yesterday. I can't wait to shoot it. It's a Springfield Amory M1911 GI. Not a high dollar 1911, but a replica of the one issued when the military still used them.
Close--I have a Colt Commander M1991. It's basically an update (more safety and reliability) of the 1911, and I really like how it handles and how accurate it is for a 4.25" barrel.
My first was a Springfield and was great. My second was a Colt MkIV Stainless that had been set up for competition shooting. Deadly accurate. My opinion is that the 1911 is the all-around best handgun ever built. Enjoy!
I had a couple of Auto-Ordnance M1911's. Had to polish the ramp to get dependable feed with semi-wadcutters. Ball fed fine, tho. I custom built one with an alloy frame, and a stainless slide. My pants didn't have as much tendency to fall down with that one!
My favorite too. I have 4. 1 Springfield full sized, 1 Norinco full sized, 1 Colt Officer lightweight, and 1 Colt Commander.
The Commander is new, still in the wrapper. I may get worked over by a local gunsmith as a carry gun one of these days. Tho, the Officer is a great little carry gun, too.
And for those of us who can't afford Colts and Springfields. I own a Llama .45acp DuoTone. And I love shooting it and the .45. Also own a Marlin 1895 in 45-70. If I could swing it I'd go for a Wilson's or a Para. Used to own a Star PD in .45acp, that was a very sweet pistol.

As for the .45 acp. .. . I've had 4 now.
Colt Gov't Model. Sold it (like an idiot.)
Colt Combat Gov't. Sold it (like an idiot.)
Colt Combat Commander (Gave it to my Dad.)
Colt Gold Cup National Match. (I'll NEVER sell it!!!!) Shoots all shots into one ragged hole at 50 yds.
I love the .45 acp!
Marlin 1895G and the 1895 CB!!! I haven't shot either, YET!
I bought them before I broke my neck. I'm a little reluctant to shoot them.
I've got a Springfield .45. I carry it everywhere I'm legally allowed to. It's my favorite handgun I've ever owned. Fits JUST right in my hand. Classic design, tough as nails, and as accurate (and more so) as I'll ever need it to be.
ohh, i love 1911s, and any pistolas that even slightly resemble them. S&W makes a pistol called the S&W1911 that is bassically a brand new redone a911 with a lotta nice features like a spurred hammer, better slide, better sights, nice trigger. if someone were looking for a trouble free 1911 that would be the trick, plus all the old slides, grips etc are backwards compatable, i think.
My dad gave me his Colt 1911 gov't issue in a black holster with the embossed circle around US letters, .30 cal Carbine, P-38 and matching Lugers in a case with cleaning kit. Add this to my Hi Standard .22 target pistol, .44 Redhawk, 8" barreled Python, HiPower Browning, Mack 10 (open bolt), M-16, Model 12, many more plus located to buy a NIB 20mm rifle with amo. .50 cal owners don't compare with 20mm's big KaBoom.
