just trying to gauge what type of repair i'm lookin' at. I have an '01 F-150 4.6L V6; and this morning during stop and go traffic, i noticed a hard shift or slight "clunk" feeling when braking (i think shifting from 3 to 2). has about 78K miles, but had some tranny work done by the dealer at 31K, just before warranty ran out. i'm the original owner, and truck has been taken care of. anyone know what kind of $$ i'm looking at???
First thoughts and all external. Could be way off but easy checks. Shackles on the rear diff could be a little loose allowing the rear to shift. Could need the infamous driveshaft lube, or tranny mount broken.
If the converter is locked in when it shifts, this would cause the harder downshifts.
went by the mechanic today and got the codes, is a mass airflow senser. could this cause a hard downshift? mechanic said doubtful but that was the only code. mechanic wants to replace the sensor for about $280. or is this just a horrible coincidence that my check engine light came on for the sensor the same day i felt the had downshift???? help!
Im not sure if they are relevent, but i would clean it before i bought a new one. Go to a autoparts store and pick up some electric contact cleaner. Then looking into the intake tube spray the wires in there.
Definitely try cleaning it first before you replace. Bad shifts can result if the computer does not has correct inputs. Shift points, Shift pressures. TC lock and unlock all are mapped. Change the sensor inputs and it changes the mapped results. So not definite it is that but possible and likely since they showed up together.
thanks bobby and tim. i have cleaned by MAF sensor in the past (tried installing one of those damn K&N filters, big mistake) so i will definatley try cleaning it this weekend before purchasing a new sensor. I pray that this was affecting my shifting, i'll post a follow-up once i've cleaned and/or replaced the sensor.
Kragen's comes with a 1 year warranty (is remanufactured). tried cleaning the stock sensor first, light came back on within 15 miles.
bought and installed the one from Kragen. Truck SEEMS to be running much better. i don't notice the hard downshift, and overall, seems to run better! So far so good, but i wanted to thank everyone for the help!
